Grand slam powers Keys' win

Waring's 22nd homer helps Frederick avoid sweep by Winston-Salem

Frederick's stagnant offense received a jolt from Brandon Waring, who belted a grand slam in the fifth inning to lift the Keys past Winston-Salem 5-3 yesterday at Harry Grove Stadium and avoid a three-game sweep.

Frederick trailed 2-1 in the fifth when Waring blasted his 22nd home run of the season, which trails only Cody Johnson of Myrtle Beach with 27 in the Carolina League.

The Dash snapped a scoreless game with two runs in the top of the fourth inning against starter Sean Gleason of the Keys. Brent Morel led off with a double and Seth Loman struck out, but a wild pitch allowed him to reach first base safely and Morel to move to third with no outs. Justin Greene followed with an infield single that scored Morel. After John Curtis walked to load the bases, Kent Gerst followed with an RBI-groundout to give the Dash a 2-0 lead.

The Keys trimmed their deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth when Wally Crancer lined an RBI- single off Jacob Rasner.

Frederick's decisive fifth inning began when Bobby Stevens led off with a single, but Billy Killian grounded into a double-play to leave the bases empty with two outs. Matt Angle and Pedro Florimon connected on back-to-back singles and Bobbie Widlansky walked to load the bases. Waring followed with a shot to straightaway center to put Frederick in front 5-2. Waring leads the league with 81 RBIs and 58 extra-base hits.

Winston-Salem added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Sergio Morales, but failed to muster a rally against the Keys bullpen, which kept the Dash scoreless during the final three innings. Eddy Gamboa surrendered an unearned run in three innings of relief and Brandon Cooney worked a perfect ninth for his third save.

Gleason (4-6) battled through five innings and held the Dash to two runs on two hits. He walked four, but still picked up the win.

Rasner (3-5) lasted five innings and gave up five runs on eight hits in his fifth loss in his last six starts.

Winston-Salem is off today.
