FREDERICK, Md.

Justin Edwards pitched six strong innings to lead Winston-Salem past Frederick 4-1 in the opener of a three-game series last night.

Edwards (4-3) limited the Keys to one run on four hits as the Dash improved to 2-3 on its current seven-game road swing.

Brent Morel provided the offensive spark, going 2 for 4 with a home run, double and two RBIs. He also made two outstanding defensive plays as the Dash went without an error for the fourth time in its past five games. The Dash leads the league with an .978 fielding percentage.

Winston-Salem jumped in front in the first inning as Greg Paiml doubled with one out and Morel followed with a two-run shot over the left-field wall against Kenny Moreland. It was Morel's team-best 15th home run and league-leading 73rd run scored.

The Keys trimmed their deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning with their lone run of the game. David Cash lined a two-out RBI single that score Caleb Joseph from third base.

Frederick managed two singles in the final seven innings.

The Dash extended its lead in the top of the sixth inning when Paiml led off with a walk and stole second. Tyler Kuhn followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no outs. Morel hit into a fielder's choice that retired Paiml trying to score from third and left runners on first and second.

Keys reliever Jake Stevens took over for Moreland and surrendered a two-out, two-run double to Justin Greene to give Winston-Salem a 4-1 lead.

Charlis Burdie pitched 12/3 innings of shutout relief for Winston-Salem and Santo Luis retired the final four batters to record his 10th save and second in two nights.

Moreland (3-1) allowed four runs on five hits in 51/3 innings and suffered his first loss in the Carolina League.

The Dash and Keys will meet in the second game of the three-game series tonight. Winston-Salem will start Miguel Socolovich (3-2, 4.84), who will be making his first start of the season. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
