Dash tops Blue Rocks 3-1, avoids series sweep

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Winston-Salem Dash turned to its ace to snap a four-game losing streak, and Anthony Carter pitched six shutout innings in a 3-1 win over the Wilmington Blue Rocks last night.

Carter limited the Blue Rocks to four singles, a walk and matched his season-high with nine strikeouts to collect his league-leading 11th win. Carter, who lowered his earned-run average to 3.98, also leads the league in innings pitched with 1331/3.

The Dash avoided a four-game sweep.

Winston-Salem's offense, which was held to two runs on eight hits in the first three games of the series, jumped out to a quick lead in the top of the first inning. Dale Mollenhauer and Greg Paiml led off with back-to-back singles against starting pitcher Alex Caldera of the Blue Rocks.

After Tyler Kuhn grounded into a double-play that left Mollenhauer at third, Brent Morel followed with a run-scoring double to put the Dash in front 1-0. Morel, who went hitless in the first three games of the series (0 for 10) finished 2 for 4 last night.

Logan Johnson staked Winston-Salem to a two-run lead when he led off the second inning with a solo home run, his 10th of the season.

The Blue Rocks pushed a run across in the bottom of the seventh against reliever Nate Jones.

Nick Van Stratten led off with a walk and a sacrifice bunt moved him to second. Ryan Eigsti followed with an RBI single to trim Wilmington's deficit to 2-1. But that is all the offense that the Blue Rocks would muster.

Winston-Salem added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Kuhn led off with a triple against Zach Peterson and scored on a wild pitch for a 3-1 lead.

The Dash bullpen made the lead stand up as Hector Santiago worked a scoreless eighth inning and Santo Luis struck out the side in order in the ninth to get his ninth save.

The Dash will continue its seven-game Carolina League road swing when it travels to Frederick, Md., to take on the Keys in the three-game series over the weekend. Left-hander Justin Edwards (3-2, 4.84 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener for the Dash tonight at 7.

The Dash will return home to Wake Forest Baseball Park next Tuesday, when it opens a four-game, three-day series with a doubleheader against the Potomac Nationals.
