Nicole Muracco and Katie O'Donnell both had a goal and an assist as No. 3 Maryland knocked off No. 1 Wake Forest 4-2 yesterday in an ACC field-hockey game at Kentner Stadium.
Wake Forest (8-1, 1-1) took the lead just 58 seconds into the game when Michelle Kasold scored an unassisted goal.
The Terrapins (8-1, 2-0) tied the score with 17:50 left in the first half when Susie Rowe flicked in a shot from 10 yards away.
Muracco scored 5:20 into the second half on a shot that went past goalkeeper Crystal Duffield to put the Terrapins ahead 2-1.
The Deacons tied the score with 24:04 left when Aileen Davis converted a penalty corner from Hilary Moore off an assist from Minou Gimbrere.
It was all Terrapins the rest of the way. Meghan Dean gave the Terrapins the lead for good with 12:35 left when she converted a penalty corner from O'Donnell off an assist from Susie Rowe.
O'Donnell scored an insurance goal with 8:15 left on a breakaway shot from 7 yards away, assisted by Muracco.
Maryland ranks third in the country with 4.63 goals per game and ranks second in defense with 0.75 goals per game.
Wake Forest will next play at Longwood in Farmville, Va., on Monday at 6 p.m. It will then travel to Chapel Hill on Saturday for a noon game against North Carolina.
