■ Running back Re'quan Boyette of Duke will take a medical redshirt this season because of difficulty recovering from knee surgery, school athletics officials said yesterday.
Boyette had surgery Aug. 9, hasn't played yet and has not recovered sufficiently to play in any of Duke's last five games, Coach David Cutcliffe said.
"While we are disappointed that Re'quan will not get on the field this season we are excited about him returning in 2009," Cutcliffe said in a statement.
Boyette, a senior, will have one season of eligibility left. He was Duke's leading rusher in 2007 and 2006 and has career totals of 251 carries for 1,072 yards and five touchdowns and 30 receptions for 140 yards.
■ Defensive end Adewale Ojomo of Miami wasn't happy with offensive tackle Joe Birdsong of Wake Forest last weekend. Ojomo thought that Birdsong hit kick returner Sam Shields with an elbow out of bounds.
Shields was on the ground for several minutes before he got up, according to the News-Press of Fort Myers.
"That was total disrespect on his part," Ojomo told the News-Press. "I saw him after the game and I told him, ‘Man, you shouldn't do that, that's not good sportsmanship. But I still shook his hand.
"I leave those things to God and the referees."
■ Cory Holt, who played at Lexington High School, could be Virginia Tech's starting quarterback in its next game Nov. 6 against Maryland.
Tech's top two quarterbacks, Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon, suffered high-ankle sprains Saturday in a loss at Florida State. Each is wearing a protective boot, and team trainers list the two as questionable against Maryland.
Holt, a fifth-year senior, replaced Glennon in the third quarter and saw his first significant action as a college quarterback. Tight end Greg Boone, a quarterback in high school, is working as the backup quarterback.
■ Kicker Graham Gano has been one of Florida State's most valuable players through seven games. He kicked his 13th consecutive field goal Saturday against Virginia Tech, breaking the old school record of 12 set in 1980. Gano has connected from 50 yards or farther in four consecutive games, another school record.
"I can't believe what he has done," Coach Bobby Bowden said. "I just can't believe it."
Gano was 3 for 3 on field-goal attempts against Virginia Tech and averaged 51.7 yards on three punts.
"I don't care where you put that doggone ball. He kicks it through the goal post," Bowden said.
