■ Cubs: A minor-league pitcher accused of throwing a ball that hit a fan in the forehead was indicted yesterday on two counts of felonious assault.
Julio Castillo, 21, who was pitching for the Peoria Chiefs of the Midwest League, is accused of throwing into the stands during a July 24 game at Dayton that featured a 10-minute, benches-clearing brawl. The fan was treated for a concussion at a hospital and released.
The Chiefs are an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, and Castillo remains in the Cubs' organization.
A Montgomery County grand jury indicted Castillo on one count of felonious assault with a deadly weapon and one count of felonious assault causing serious physical harm.
Castillo was attempting to hit a Dayton player in the dugout, but instead struck the fan in the head, according to the Montgomery County prosecutor's office.
■ Nationals: Less than a month after firing Pat Corrales as their bench coach, Washington is making him a special consultant to General Manager Jim Bowden.
Washington also announced yesterday that Devon White, a former major-league outfielder, will be a special assistant for player development. White was the Nationals' roving outfield coordinator last season.
Corrales, 67, was Manager Manny Acta's bench coach the past two seasons. Most of Acta's coaching staff was removed on the last day of the regular season.
■ Brewers: Milwaukee claimed third baseman Casey McGehee off waivers yesterday from the Chicago Cubs and designated infielder Joe Dillon for assignment to make room on the roster. McGehee, 26, spent most of last season at Class AAA Iowa and hit .296 with 12 homers and 92 RBIs in 133 games. In a September call up, he hit .167 and drove in five runs in his first nine major-league games.
■ Astros: Houston is freezing 2009 ticket prices at 2008 levels.
The ticket prices at Minute Maid Park will range from $7 for adults and $1 for children for upper-deck tickets in the left- and right-field corners to $48 per ticket for dugout level seats.
Astros owner Drayton McLane said Tuesday the organization made the decision in response to the tough economic climate the nation faces.
■ Athletics: First baseman Daric Barton has undergone surgery on his right hip, while left-handed pitcher Greg Smith had an operation to removed loose bodies from the elbow on his pitching arm.
Both procedures were performed Friday, the team said Tuesday.
Barton batted .226 with nine home runs and 47 RBIs in his first full major-league season in 2008, playing in 140 games. Smith, 24, went 7-16 with a 4.16 ERA over 32 starts and 190 2-3 innings in his first big-league season.
