Ninth-ranked Duke got a key ACC victory at Koskinen Stadium last night, a 3-1 win against 15th-ranked Wake Forest.
"We needed that quality win," said Coach Robbie Church. "Our goal was to win two games with six points, so we're half way there."
The first half featured four shots, but one of those gave Duke (10-2-1, 2-1-1) the lead in the 37th minute. Off a throw in at midfield, Meaghan FitzGerald and Rebecca Allen teamed to set up senior Kelly Hathorn with a scoring chance. Hathorn broke at the pass by Allen and beat goalkeeper Laura Morse of Wake Forest (8-4, 1-3) to the ball. Hathorn hit the left corner for her second goal of the season.
In the second half, Wake Forest had one of its best scoring chances of the match when Amy Smerdzinski fired a shot at the Duke goal.
The ball slipped wide left past diving Duke goalie Cassidy Powers.
The Blue Devils wasted no time getting a two-goal lead. Junior Elisabeth Redmond passed the ball to senior Kelly McCann, who took off down the far side of the field. McCann beat three Deacons defenders on a 70-yard run before sending a short cross to Redmond, who one-timed the ball into the left corner at the 53:09 mark.
It was Redmond's ninth goal of the season.
Twelve minutes later, freshman Ashley Rape launched a feed down the middle of the field to sophomore Marybeth Kreger, who was then fouled by Eleanor Davidson in the box for a penalty kick. Redmond scored on the penalty kick, her 11th goal of the season.
