College-Football Notebook: Deacons-Pack game time set

»  Comments | Post a Comment

■ Kickoff for the Wake Forest-N.C. State game in Raleigh on Nov. 15 has been set for 3:30, Wake Forest officials announced yesterday. The game will be televised on ESPNU.

Also yesterday, the ACC announced times for three other games Nov. 15. Duke will play at Clemson at noon (Raycom), North Carolina will play at Maryland at 3:30 (ABC/ESPN), and Boston College will play at Florida State at 8 p.m. (ABC).

■ With ESPN exercising its six-day option, the ACC waited until last weekend to announce times for Saturday.

Georgia Tech will play at North Carolina at noon (Raycom), and Notre Dame will play at Boston College at 8 p.m. (ESPN). Three other games will start at 3:30 -- N.C. State at Duke; Virginia at Wake Forest (ESPNU); and Clemson at Florida State (ABC or ESPN).

■ Andrew Gardner, a senior offensive tackle for Georgia Tech, is considering season-ending shoulder surgery, Coach Paul Johnson said yesterday.

A decision from Gardner could come as soon as today.

Gardner was listed as questionable last week with a sore shoulder but was able to make his 48th consecutive start in Georgia Tech's 31-28 win over Florida State.

Gardner has started every game of his career, but that streak, and his season, could end this week.

■ Don't look for Clemson's former football coach at the annual Bowden Bowl.

Tommy Bowden said in a text message yesterday to The Associated Press that he won't be attending the Tigers' game this weekend at Florida State. It will mark the first time in 10 seasons that the game won't feature a coaching battle between Tommy and his father, Seminoles coach Bobby Bowden.

Tommy had won the past three games, and four of the past five, against his dad.

Tommy Bowden stepped away from Clemson on Oct. 13, saying it was best for the program.

The Tigers (4-4) and interim coach Dabo Swinney snapped a three-game losing streak last Saturday with a 27-21 victory at Boston College.

■ Defensive tackle Troy Epps of Florida will miss the rest of the season after surgery to repair a torn knee ligament.

Epps, a junior-college transfer who played in five games this season, tore the anterior-cruciate ligament in his right knee during practice two weeks ago. He had season-ending surgery late last week.

Epps came to Florida in January after spending the last two years at Coffeyville Junior College in Kansas.

■ Benedict coach Stanley Conner is recovering after having a heart attack during a game against Kentucky State.

Conner was in good condition, according to a Providence Hospitals spokeswoman yesterday. His vital signs are stable and within normal ranges, and he is conscious and comfortable.

Conner began feeling ill just before halftime of Saturday's home game and was taken to the locker room and then to the hospital. Assistant Brian Wajert coached the team in the second half of Benedict's 42-35 victory.

■ Defensive end Auston English could miss the next two games for sixth-ranked Oklahoma after spraining his left knee.

Coach Bob Stoops said yesterday that English could be out "maybe three weeks" with the injury that knocked him out in the third quarter of Oklahoma's 62-28 win over Nebraska on Saturday. The Sooners (8-1, 4-1 Big 12) play at Texas A&M this week, then play at home against No. 2 Texas Tech next week before getting a week off.

Their season finale is Nov. 29 at No. 8 Oklahoma State.

English was chosen as the Big 12's preseason defensive player of the year after leading the conference in sacks last season. He has 4½ sacks and 27 tackles through nine games for the Sooners this season.

■ Tom Amstutz will resign after the season as the coach of Toledo, which is heading for a third straight losing year.

Toledo is 2-6, although one of its victories came against Michigan. Amstutz is 57-38 in eight years at Toledo.
