North Davidson, Starmount advance in baseball playoffs

North Davidson 11, Watauga 4: North Davidson jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and coasted past visiting Watauga last night in a third-round game of the NCHSAA 4-A playoffs.

The Black Knights (23-3) will play next week's quarterfinal at Charlotte Ardrey Kell. Watauga finished 18-11.

NCISAA 3-A championships: Bradford Church won the long jump and helped the Forsyth Country Day boys to second place after one day of competition in the NCISAA 3-A championships at FCD.

With five boys finals and five girls finals completed, Cary Academy led Charlotte Providence Day 35-25 in the girls standings, and Providence Day led FCD 35-23 in the boys standings.

Tennis

NCHSAA championships: Mount Airy's Nick John and Dusty Roberson stayed in contention for a state title yesterday during early-round play in the NCHSAA 1-A championships at the Cary Tennis Center.

John and Roberson won two doubles matches by 6-1, 6-1 scores, defeating Spring Creek's Daniel Richter and Colby Strickland in the first round and Hampstead Topsail's Josh Grant and Conor Hughes in the semis.
