The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County High School Sports Hall of Fame inducted a class of seven last night in ceremonies at the Benton Convention Center.
The new members are: LaQuanda Barksdale Quick and Chris Paul, former basketball players at West Forsyth; Jimmy Caldwell, who was a three-sport star at Mount Tabor; Paul Cloud (basketball) from Parkland; Porsche Jones (basketball) and Lashun Peoples (football) from Carver; and Martha Land, the principal at Mount Tabor.
Paul, now playing for the NBA's New Orleans Hornets, graduated from West Forsyth in 2003 and played two seasons at Wake Forest.
Quick was a four-time all-conference player at West Forsyth (1994-97) and a three-time member of the Journal's All-Northwest team. She also played at UNC and with the WNBA's Portland Fire.
Caldwell starred in football, basketball and track at Mount Tabor but made his mark on the football field, playing multiple positions in 1995 and '96 and catching 23 touchdown passes his last two varsity seasons. He went on to play at Wake Forest.
Cloud made the Journal's All-Northwest basketball team twice, set Parkland's scoring record (17.5 ppg) as a junior (1969-70) and played at High Point College.
Jones led Carver to the Class 3-A title game twice and the 2001 state championship. She was a four-time All-Northwest pick and played at Wake Forest.
Peoples led Carver to the 3-A state title in 1998, scoring 26 touchdowns as a running back, defensive back and special-teams returner.
With Land as principal, Mount Tabor has had a long run of success in athletics since 1992, winning 12 state titles, 35 regional titles and three Wachovia Cups.
