Talbert, Duncan victorious in quarters of Tar Heel Qualifier

Mooresville's Kathryn Talbert and Winston-Salem's Kayla Duncan stayed on track for a potential title rematch at the Tar Heel Qualifier junior tennis championships yesterday at Hanes Park.

Talbert, the defending Girls 18 singles champion, and Duncan, the 2007 runner-up, each cruised to quarterfinal wins yesterday. Talbert beat Raleigh's Kirstin Kohagen 6-2, 6-2 and Duncan defeated Greensboro's Jennifer Ansari 6-1, 6-1.

Also yesterday, Greensboro's Conner Sherwood rallied from a set down to beat Raleigh's William Rollinson in a quarterfinal match in Boys 18 singles. Sherwood lost the first set 4-6 before bouncing back to win the next two sets 6-2 and 6-4.

Chloe Willets of Winston-Salem also had an impressive come-from-behind win. Willets, playing in the Girls 14 quarterfinals, dropped the first set 6-1 to Cameron Sloan of Raleigh. Willets then rallied to win the next two sets 6-1 and 6-3 to advance to the semifinals.

Semifinals will be held today and the finals on Monday at Hanes Park.
