Mount Tabor pitcher commits to UNC

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Parker Thomas, a 6-5, 225-pound right-handed pitcher from Mount Tabor, has committed to play baseball at North Carolina, Coach Mike Lovelace of Mount Tabor said. Thomas, a rising senior, also had offers from Appalachian State, East Carolina and N.C. State.

Thomas was 4-4 with a 3.40 earned-run average and 69 strikeouts in 46 innings last season, and Lovelace said that Thomas' fastball is consistently in the low 90-mile-an-hour range and has been clocked as fast as 94 mph.

Thomas, also a standout defensive end in football, was not going to play football this fall, Lovelace said, but he changed his mind after baseball coach Mike Fox of UNC suggested that he play.

"He had those other offers, but he was just waiting on Carolina," Lovelace said. "The truth is, he might never set foot on campus. That's how good he is, and he has the size and the frame. But he really does have a chance (of turning professional out of high school)."
