Receiver Brinkman out; Grant is now at WVU

■ Senior receiver Chip Brinkman has been sidelined during preseason practices by a strained hamstring.

Trainer Don Steelman said that Brinkman may miss around two weeks, but should be recovered by the opener on Aug. 28 at Baylor.

Brinkman, who is from Belleair, Fla., caught 27 passes last season for 225 yards.

■ The name Uriah Grant is one that might haunt Wake Forest coaches and fans in years to come.

Grant, a defensive tackle who was one of the standouts of the 2007 recruiting class, was admitted to Wake Forest, passed two summer school classes and actually practiced for two weeks with the football team. But during the third week of last practice last August, the NCAA notified Wake Forest that it wouldn't accept his standardized test score because of alleged irregularities.

Grant returned home to Miramar, Fla., where he passed the standardized test and regained his eligibility. Nevertheless, he was unsuccessful in his attempts to regain admission to Wake Forest.

So Coach Jim Grobe called his friend Bill Stewart, the new head coach at West Virginia, and soon thereafter Grant was accepted there. He has a chance to be a star for the Mountaineers.

Grobe said he found no fault with the admissions office at Wake Forest. He also said he's confident that Grant will flourish at West Virginia, where Jeff Mullen, a former Deacons assistant, is the new offensive coordinator.

"I think he will turn out to be a really, really good player," Grobe said. "I think the good news is that Stew needed defensive linemen really badly.

"So I called Stew and I said ‘Stew, here's the deal. You and I have been friends for a long, long time. I'm going to do something for you that you'll never be able to repay.'"
