PTIA officials push for taxiway

GREENSBORO

Officials with Piedmont Triad International Airport want to ensure that several hundred acres of airport property aren't left as no man's land when a future interstate segment is completed in northern Guilford County.

Airport leaders have been consulting with the N.C. Department of Transportation about the proposed section of Interstate 73, which would spur off the beltway around Greensboro north of the PTIA terminal. The I-73 route would bisect about 800-900 acres on the northwestern part of the airport property. The airport covers nearly 4,000 total acres.

Airport officials are negotiating with the DOT to ensure that a taxiway bridge could be built over I-73 to allow access by airplanes to the northwestern PTIA land for future development, said Henry Isaacson, chairman of the Piedmont Triad Airport Authority. The matter was discussed at the airport governing board's meeting Tuesday.

The northwestern airport property is north of Bryan Boulevard and bordered on the west generally by Regional Road. It would extend toward the Pleasant Ridge Golf Course.

Isaacson and PTIA Executive Director Kevin Baker said airport leaders are working on sources of funding to pay for a taxiway and bridge extending to the northwestern PTIA land. The taxiway and bridge would cost about $56 million, Baker said, and funding would be eligible for a match from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Isaacson said airport officials don't want I-73 to be built in the coming years without a taxiway access to the northwestern PTIA land, which would severely limit the property's development for aviation purposes.
