IN EDUCATION
- Elizabeth Earle, a student at West Forsyth High School, has been recognized as the Rotary Club of Clemmons' Student of the Month for January. She is an AP Scholar, a member of the National Honor Society and a Junior Marshal.
In addition to her academic accomplishments, Earle is involved in school organizations including the Dance Team, the Student Leadership Committee, the Girls Service Club, the West Wackos Spirit Club, the Young Democrats, the National Dance Honor Society, the Senior Class Council and the yearbook staff.
Earle is also involved in organizations outside of school, including Habitat for Humanity and the Dancers Edge competition team, with which she travels the country competing and has won championships in the senior division. She is an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, participating in the Youth Group and as a server at worship services.
Earle will attend Wake Forest University in the fall.
- Kedrick Williams, a student at Saint Paul's College in Virginia, has been selected to receive the William "Bill" McGill male scholarship award. Williams will receive the award during the annual United Negro College Fund Council Alumni Recognition Banquet in Orlando, Fla., in February.
The scholarship is $2,000. It is in memory of McGill, an avid UNCF supporter and volunteer for many years.
Williams, a native of Winston-Salem, is a senior business administration major with concentrations in business management and business marketing. After graduation, he will begin a paid internship for Brand Jordan in Portland, Ore.
IN THE ARTS
- "In the Palms of Angels," a poetry collection by Terri Kirby Erickson of Lewisville, has been selected to appear in "American Life in Poetry" in 2013.
"American Life in Poetry" is a project by Ted Kooser, a former poet laureate of the United States, that provides newspapers and online publications with a free weekly column featuring contemporary American poems.
Also, Erickson's poem "At the Bowling Alley" was one of 20 poems chosen out of 2,000 submissions for inclusion in the "2013 Poet's Market," published by Writers Digest Books.
IN THE MILITARY
- Air Force Airman 1st Class Darrell L. Sydnor II has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
The eight-week program included training in military discipline and studies, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Sydnor also earned credits toward an associate degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force.
Sydnor is a 2008 graduate of East Forsyth High School. He is the son of Darrell Sydnor Sr. of Fishers, Ind.
- Marine Corps Pvt. Dylan J. Reardon, son of Donna Lewis of Mount Airy, has completed 12 weeks of basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C.
- Col. Terry Hales of Davie County was recently appointed by Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-5th, as chairman of her Service Academy Nomination Board. Hales has served on the board since it was established in 2006. The board evaluates applicants for nomination to the service academies: West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy and Merchant Marine Academy.
Hales is the ROTC instructor at Davie County High School, where he has served for 11 years. He retired after 31 years in the Army, becoming an ROTC teacher at a number of local schools before being the instructor at Davie. In the Army he was deployed on two tours of duty in Vietnam, 1967-68 and 1970-71.
IN SCOUTING
- Recently, Girl Scout members of Girl Scouts Carolinas Peaks to Piedmont participated in the FIRST LEGO League regional tournaments.
Local participants and winners included Angelica Webster of Clemmons, a member of Team No. 2294 (Guilford County), "The Girl Scout Tinkers." Her team received the Judges Award and will advance to the state competition.
Also, Team No. 2297 of Forsyth County, "Vibrant Innovators," received the Gracious Professionalism Award. The team members are Ayianna Batts, Kenya Brabham, Amaya Cockerham, Daia Dawkins, Cierra Godfrey, Karina Hernandez, Amaris Holmes and Amyah Wilds.
FIRST LEGO League is an international robotics program for boys and girls ages 9 to 14, designed to foster an interest in science and technology, and teach valuable life skills. Teams, composed of up to 10 members with at least one adult coach, can be associated with a pre-existing club or organization, home-schooled or a group of friends.
IN SPORTS
- The Carolina Spirit Athletics Special-Needs Coed Cheer Squad is a special-needs all-star cheerleading team that has nine girls from the Winston-Salem area. They have been training since September and recently competed in their first competition at the Spirit of Hope National Competition in Charlotte. They received first place in their division.
The squad members are Ashley Butler, Samantha Cloer, Allie Howerton, Brandi Ebron, Meredith Johnson, Sherekia Johnson, Megan Miller, Jennifer Muster and Rachel Rushing.
The squad is the creation of The Wall Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children with special needs by using sports to help them improve motor skills and their physical and spiritual health.
