North Carolina has received one passing grade from the American Lung Association on the state's attempts to discourage smoking use. And that's better than last year.
In a report released Thursday, the group gave the state a "C" on smoking cessation, partly because of help available through the state Medicaid program. North Carolina got three "Fs" for smoke-free air, cigarette tax and tobacco prevention control and spending. Last year, the state failed in all categories.
The association criticized the General Assembly for abolishing the Health and Wellness Trust Fund. The report says some of the fund's money went to tobacco use prevention and cessation but notes that the money is non-recurring.
