Scientists find 'lost' Darwin fossils

British scientists have found scores of fossils the great evolutionary theorist Charles Darwin and his peers collected but that had been lost for more than 150 years.

Howard Falcon-Lang, a paleontologist at Royal Holloway, University of London, said today that he stumbled upon the 314 glass slides containing the fossils in an old wooden cabinet that had been shoved in a "gloomy corner" of the massive, drafty British Geological Survey.

Homs 'under siege,' Syrian lawmaker says

A member of Syria's parliament has left the country to join the opposition against President Bashar Assad's regime, saying the Syrian people are suffering human rights violations.

Imad Ghalioun, who represents the central city of Homs, said the city is a disaster after months of being a focus of the regime's fierce crackdown.

"The people of Homs are under siege," he said from Egypt. "There is no electricity, piles of garbage fill the streets. … The sounds of shelling all night terrify children."

Japanese panel vows deeper nuclear probe

A newly formed investigative panel on Japan's nuclear disaster will use its subpoena powers wisely and cut deeper into the accident than the government's probe, the leader of the independent commission said Monday.

The 10-member panel appointed by parliament last month includes outspoken critics of Japan's nuclear policy. It is expected to examine the extent to which the 9.0-magnitude earthquake contributed to the crisis at the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant, as well as the ensuing tsunami and radiation alert system.

Miami-Dade County Circuit Court records show that JPMorgan Chase filed for foreclosure in September on the four-bedroom, four-bath house. Simpson's attorney has filed a motion to dismiss the case.

Sheriff: Boy, 15, admits killing sister

Authorities in western Arkansas say a 15-year-old boy told them he shot his older sister and that they are investigating the death as a homicide.

Franklin County Sheriff Anthony Boen says the brother appeared remorseful when he told investigators that he killed his 16-year-old sister on Sunday morning. Authorities found the girl's body in a bedroom. Boen says the siblings' parents were out shopping when the shooting happened.

El Salvador president apologizes for deaths

El Salvador's president has formally apologized for the 1981 El Mozote massacre and acknowledged the government's responsibility for killing 936 civilians in a counterinsurgency operation. President Mauricio Funes says the army committed "the biggest massacre of civilians in the contemporary history of Latin America."
