IN EDUCATION
- Adam Joiner, a teacher at Jefferson Middle School, has won $750 in cash and $250 in fresh fruit for an essay he wrote promoting healthy eating among students in the "Cash for Classrooms" contest.
The "Cash for Classrooms" contest, now in its second year, is sponsored by Fresh Del Monte Produce Inc.
IN THE ARTS
- The following awards were presented during the recent Piedmont Craftsmen annual meeting:
Awards of Excellence, given for outstanding craftsmanship, went to Chris Horney (wood), Becky and Steve Lloyd (clay) and Chery Cratty (fiber).
Sherpa Awards, which honor outstanding volunteers, were given to Bill Benton (supporting member), Lucinda Brogden (exhibiting member), Susie Christiansen (supporting member) and Cindy Cox Wilson (supporting member).
Steven Summerville, , a potter, received the NewBridge Bank People's Choice Award. It is presented to the artist who is voted the favorite by visitors to the Piedmont Craftsmen's Fair.
IN PUBLIC SERVICE
- Thirteen Forsyth County Department of Social Services employees were recently recognized for their milestone years of service. Those recognized were:
Paula Anderson, 20 years; Deborah Bates, 25 years; Sherri Cook, 20 years; Celina Crawley, 20 years; Judy Hamilton, 20 years; Amy Hardin, 20 years; Angelique Jefferson, 20 years; Kathryn Lawson, 20 years; Lynn Linville, 20 years; Shirley Phelps, 40 years; Ann Roberts, 25 years; Gail Stewart, 20 years; and Carolyn Thomas, 25 years.
IN THE MILITARY
- Marine Corps Pvt. Hassell C. Brown has completed 12 weeks of basic training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. He is the son of Tammy R. Brown and Hassell C. Brown, Jr., both of East Bend.
- Marine Corps Pvt. Sarah E. Park, daughter of Melissa G. Taylor of Climax and Lloyd M. Park of Mount Airy, has completed 12 weeks of basic training at Parris Island.
IN SCOUTING
- Will Rierson , a member of Boy Scouts Troop 922, has been awarded the Eagle Scout Award. For his Eagle project, Will, along with 20 of his fellow Scouts, refurbished the Strangers Graveyard at Bethabara Park. The graveyard's stacked wooden fence was repaired, the interior of the graveyard was cleaned, wooden rails were placed to outline walkways and mulch was placed.
Will's positions with Troop 922 have included patrol leader, scribe and librarian. Will is a sophomore at East Forsyth High School and the son of Steve and Debra Rierson of Winston-Salem.
IN OTHER AREAS
- Twenty-two North Carolina high school science teachers recently visited the Highlands Biological Station for a weekend retreat focusing on the impact of climate change on the Southern Appalachian mountain ecosystem. The retreat was part of a year-long professional development program, the N.C. Climate Fellows Program. Local participants at the retreat included Ruthann McComb of Elkin High School, Edward Thutt of Reagan High School and Suzanne Kuebler of the Career Center.
Rick Eklund of Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School and Amaris Carr of Parkland High School did not participate in the Highlands retreat, but they are enrolled in the climate fellows program.
The program is sponsored by UNC Chapel Hill's Institute for the Environment with funding provided by the NASA Innovations in Climate Education Program.
