IN EDUCATION

  • John Z. Clodfelter has been named to the dean's list at Montreat College. He is a senior majoring in English literature.

Clodfelter is the son of Suzanne and Brown Clodfelter of Clemmons.

  • Morgan Clara Cutright has graduated cum laude from N.C. State University with a bachelor's degree in psychology and a minor in Italian studies. She is planning to enter law school.

Cutright is the granddaughter of Rufus and Peggy Willard of Lewisville.

  • Hollis Elizabeth Lineberger has been named to the dean's list at Vanderbilt University. She is a freshman with a double major in political science and Spanish.

Lineberger is the daughter of Karen and Steve Lineberger of Winston-Salem.

  • David Winfield McCandless has been named to the president's list at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he is majoring in chemical engineering. He will be interning with ConocoPhillips in Midland, Texas, this summer.

McCandless is the son of Mary and Michael McCandless of Winston-Salem.

  • Meghan Elizabeth McCandless has graduated summa cum laude from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. She will work for NAVAIR at the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point.

McCandless is a 2007 graduate of Calvary Baptist Day School. She is the daughter of Mary and Michael McCandless of Winston-Salem.

  • EnergyUnited recently awarded Bright Ideas grants totaling $3,302 to three Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools teachers. These awards are among 28 Bright Ideas grants totaling about $40,000 given to educators in 19 North Carolina counties for special projects that will help enhance classroom innovation and instruction.

The teachers selected were Cynthia Needham, Griffith Elementary School, for her project "Mobile Literature Libraries"; Heather Stickler, North Hills Elementary School, for her project "Healthy Foods"; and Dave Boyer, Kernersville Middle School, for his project "X Prize Rocketry Project."

IN PUBLIC SERVICE

These local North Carolina State Highway Patrol employees have received departmental awards:

  • Trooper B.J. Baker, Troop E, District 5 (Elkin), received the SHP Humanitarian Award.
  • Sergeant R.G. Crater, Troop H, District 1 (Winston-Salem), received the SHP Samaritan Award.
  • Sergeant P.M. Dixon, Troop E, District 4 (Winston-Salem), received the SHP Meritorious Service Award.

IN THE MILITARY

  • Ronald Solis, an airman, has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. His eight-week training program included military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. By completing the training, he also earned credits toward an associate's degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force.

Solis is a 2011 graduate of Davie High School and is the son of Ana Ramos of Mocksville.

IN OTHER AREAS

  • Cameron Payne, age 12, was recently recognized by the Kohl's Cares Scholarship Program. It honors young volunteers, ages 6 to 18, for their volunteer efforts above and beyond what is normally expected of children. Cameron received a gift card and certificate in recognition of his community efforts.

In 2008, Cameron started a book-donation organization after a neighbor's house burned down and the children lost all their possessions. Seeing their need, he started The Children's Book Legacy, an organization that has donated new and slightly used books to organizations such as Brenner Children's Hospital and the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center Library. He has organized the donation of thousands of books, including ones for blind and low-vision students.

Cameron is the son of Jasmine Payne and the grandson of Beryl and Bobby Mankins, all of Winston-Salem.

  • The Rotary Club of Clemmons has honored Jenny and Sherrill Braswell of Winston-Salem by building a water well in Leon, Nicaragua. It has been named in their honor. The well recognizes the couple's lifetime of service to the community and their shared passion for health care, including clean drinking water for the needy.
  • The High Rock Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapter from Davidson County placed 14th out of 42 participating teams in the National FFA Environmental and Natural Resources Career Development Event at the National FFA Convention held at Purdue University. The team, led by adviser Lisa Loflin, was awarded a Silver emblem.

The team members were Addison McLamb, Alexandria Loflin, Joshua Condray and Matthew Modlin. They qualified by being the highest placed FFA team at the North Carolina Envirothon last spring.

Members also competed for individual awards with 163 other participants. Alexandria Loflin and McLamb received Gold emblems; Condray received a Silver emblem; and Modlin received a Bronze emblem.

Also, Alexandria Loflin was the third highest individual at the competition and received a $1,000 scholarship for the post-secondary school of her choice.

The High Rock FFA Chapter is one of two home-schooled FFA chapters in the nation.
