United Way of Forsyth County said Wednesday that it exceeded its $17.3 million goal for its 2011 fundraising campaign.
Agency officials did not provide actual numbers, saying money is still coming in.
"That kind of performance does not come from wishing and praying and hoping," said Sallye Liner, the campaign's chairwoman and chief clinical officer for Novant Health. "It comes from hard work. It comes from commitment. It comes from more than one person or 10 people.
"It comes from hundreds of people in this community, pulling together to make sure they protect and preserve what is important in the very fiber of this community."
Liner spoke before a group of about 150 people, including representatives from some of the 32 partner agencies served by the United Way, at Forsyth Medical Center.
Cindy Gordineer, president of United Way of Forsyth County, said in an interview that the support of its partner agencies is critical to the organization's success.
"United Way does not deliver services," she said. "The partner agencies are the ones who are actually delivering services, meeting with clients and making sure that people have their needs met."
The agency said its partnerships are creating dramatic outcomes in education, financial stability and community health.
For example, United Way rolled out its Graduating Our Future initiative in 2007 at Parkland Magnet High School. Now, the graduation rate at the school has risen to 74.1 percent from 65.8 percent, a 12.6 percent increase, the agency said.
United Way of Forsyth County's 2010 campaign goal was also $17.3 million. The agency surpassed its goal that year by raising $17,325,153.
