Maya Angelou, an internationally acclaimed author and poet, is recuperating at her Winston-Salem home after being hospitalized for three days, according to a statement released this morning by her publicist.
Officials at Texas Woman's University in Denton, Texas, confirmed this week that an appearance by Angelou scheduled for Wednesday was canceled due to illness.
The publicist did not give any further details about the nature of the illness or Angelou's condition, saying it was a private matter.
Angelou is Reynolds Professor of American Studies at Wake Forest University.
Angelou has served on two presidential committees, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Arts in 2000, the Lincoln Medal in 2008, and has received three Grammy Awards. President Bill Clinton requested that she compose a poem to read at his inauguration in 1993. Dr. Angelou's reading of her poem "On the Pulse of the Morning" was broadcast live around the world.
