The legislature's fiscal watchdog agency says the state should close an Elizabeth City museum, a Kinston historic site and reduce operating hours at seven other locations to reduce operating expenses at attractions with high costs and low visitor traffic.
Also on the proposed closing list are the Thomas Wolfe Memorial in Asheville, the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Memorial in Sedalia and Alamance Battleground.
The Program Evaluation Division's report released Tuesday calculated that these and other recommendations would save about $2 million annually. The Associated Press
Prosecutor faults racial bias study
An assistant district attorney is arguing that a study claiming racial bias in North Carolina's capital murder trials can't be trusted.
Union County prosecutor Jonathan Perry gave closing arguments Tuesday in the Racial Justice Act hearing. Perry said a Michigan State University study was based on a sample of death penalty cases that was too limited to provide meaningful results.
Marcus Robinson's attorneys present their closing arguments beginning today. Robinson, who is black, is trying to prove racism played a role in the death penalty he received for killing a white teenager in 1991. If he proves his claim, the act calls for him to be sentenced to life in prison without parole.
