Community Milestones for Feb. 13

IN EDUCATION

  • Miranda Propst, a sophomore at UNC Greensboro, was recently recognized by the university's Office of Housing and Residence Life at the Annual Academic Ceremony of Excellence.

The ceremony recognized student staff members, both undergraduate and graduate, who earned a minimum of a 3.0 GPA while on staff during the fall 2011 semester.

Propst is a 2010 graduate of West Forsyth High School. She is the daughter of Rodney and Louise Lash of Winston-Salem.

  • The Dean Prim Scholarship Fund Committee has announced that the following local high school students will receive academic scholarships and travel scholarships for 2012. The scholarships are awarded annually to high school juniors and seniors who excel in academics, athletics and extracurricular activities and who are committed to travel and study in a foreign country.

The Prim Scholarship is $1,500 yearly for four years of undergraduate study and also provides for an educational tour in China this summer. The recipients are:

Treyaun Quantez Fulton, a Crosby Scholar and senior at Parkland High School. He is the son of Hattie Fulton of Winston-Salem.

Macon Christopher Gambill, a senior at Mount Tabor High School who plans to attend UNC Chapel Hill. He is the son of Chris and Joy Gambill of Winston-Salem.

Catherine Elizabeth Joyce, a junior at Forbush High School. She is the daughter of Richard and Rachel Joyce of East Bend.

The travel scholarship covers the costs of an educational tour of China. The recipients are:

Jennifer Lynn Baity, a junior at Forbush High School. She is the daughter of Ted and Lorie Baity of Yadkinville.

Taylor Elyse Brendle, a junior at Forbush High School. She is the daughter of Scott and Amie Taylor of East Bend.

Brett Donovan Pinnix, a senior at Starmount High School. He is the son of William and Andrea Pinnix of Hamptonville.

The Dean Prim Scholarship Fund was established by the family of Dean Prim, a former Yadkin County Board of Education member, to honor his dedication to youth and education. This is the 37th year of the fund.

IN THE ARTS

  • Forsyth Country Day School students earned two gold keys, five silver keys, and 10 honorable mentions at the recent Scholastic Art Competition. They are:

Gold Key Awards: Meredith Spaid, two gold keys for "Abstract Windows" (photo) and "Self Reflection" (photo).

Silver Key Awards: Kimberly Perkins, "Prowling" (photo); Erin Gebbia, three silver keys for "Civil War Goodbyes and Letters" (comic art); "Civil War Battle and Loss" (comic art) and "From Practice to Performance" (comic art); and Lauren Gebbia, "Not Abandoned" (mixed media).

Honorable mentions: Imran Cronk, two honorable mentions for "Holy Man" (photo) and "Photography Portfolio" (photo); Meredith Spaid, "The Ride" (photo); Nicole Angell, "Winged Wisdom" (acrylic painting); Emoni Fitch, two honorable mentions for "Dimensions" (ceramic) and "Necklace and Earrings" (jewelry); Erin Gebbia, "Art Portfolio" (studio art); Megan Martin, "Venice" (mixed media); Ian Nelson, "Natural Rhythm" (film); and Courtney Tambling, "Perambulating Through the Hills" (mixed media).

IN THE MILITARY

  • Air Force Airman Alissa B. Lawrence has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

The eight-week program included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Also, after completing her training, she earned credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Lawrence is a 2009 graduate of Reynolds High School. She is the daughter of Carolyn Christian of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Navy Seaman Andrew R. Lammon has completed Navy basic training at Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, Ill.

The eight-week program included classroom study and practical instruction on naval customs, first aid, firefighting, water safety and survival, and shipboard and aircraft safety.

Lammon is a 2010 graduate of Surry Central High School. He is the son of Robin H. Davis of Dobson and Robert S. Lammon of Colorado Springs, Colo.

IN OTHER AREAS

Middle and high school students from Forsyth County joined a group of more than 200 students from across North Carolina who attended the recent TRU Youth Advocacy Day in Raleigh.

As part of the event, students learned how to be advocates in their communities, giving voice to the need for healthy policies and prevention programs.

Nikhiya Young, a junior at Reynolds High School, received a TRU Star Award for her work on tobacco prevention.
