The City-County Planning Board approved the expansion of a debris landfill on Piney Grove Road north of Kernersville and changes to the Brookberry Farm housing development at its monthly meeting Thursday.
The landfill case will now go before the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners for final approval.
David and Betty Lawson want two separate parcels on opposite sides of their current 17.7-acre landfill, across from Ridge Hill Drive, rezoned from residential to limited industrial district. The parcels consist of a combined 6.4 acres of undeveloped land, except for two utility buildings.
Adjacent properties around the landfill are zoned residential. Some are undeveloped, and others have single-family homes.
Brad Coe, who provided surveying services and drew up a site plan for the petition, said he and the Lawsons appreciate the planning board's staff for working with them and Lawson's neighbors for supporting his business.
The board also approved changes to portions of the 795-acre Brookberry Farm housing development on the west side of Meadowlark Drive, just south of Robinhood Road.
Brookberry Farm LLC wants to amend its original plan to allow several mixed uses on 68 acres, including small-scale commercial/office, park/open space, single-family homes, townhouses and live/work units.
This case will move on to the Winston-Salem City Council and the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners for a final decision.
