A 42-year-old Winston-Salem man was sentenced Thursday to life in prison after he was convicted of raping a woman in her apartment last year.
A Forsyth County jury convicted Wade Leon Shaw, of 2330 Blecker Drive, of first-degree rape, first-degree kidnapping, second-degree burglary and assault by strangulation, according to court documents.
Judge Robert Johnson of Forsyth Superior Court sentenced Shaw to life in prison without the possibility of parole on the first-degree rape charge. Johnson sentenced Shaw to 35 years to 42 years and nine months on a first-degree sex offense charge.
He consolidated the burglary and the assault charge and sentenced Shaw to 11 years and six months to 14 years and seven months. He arrested judgment on the kidnapping charge.
Shaw is accused of breaking into a woman's apartment on January 2, 2011, armed with a knife, and raping the woman. He is also accused of choking the woman and restraining her, according to court documents.

Hearing is continued for Occupy protester
A hearing was continued Thursday for an Occupy Winston-Salem protester who was arrested in December after Winston-Salem police broke up a group meeting held outside City Hall.
William Bryant Bridge, 20, of 615 Summit St., was making a profanity-laced tirade against police and walking down the sidewalk when patrol officers moved to arrest him. He was pinned against a brick wall and subdued.
Police charged Bridge with disorderly conduct and resisting a public officer.
Bridge is scheduled to appear in court on April 17.
