Two killed as car plunges off overpass in Lexington

Two people were killed and one person was critically injured when the car they were in plummeted nearly 50 feet off an overpass from U.S. 52 on Friday, authorities told WGHP/FOX8, the Winston-Salem Journal's news gathering partner.

Thea-Simone McDuffy, 19, and Shavalos Jameson, 21, both of Charlotte, were killed in the accident, which happened about 1:15 p.m. at the bridge over Old U.S. 64.

Tre-von Rutherford, 16, of Charlotte, was in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. A spokesman for the N.C. Highway Patrol told the television station that his injuries are considered life-threatening.

Troopers said they don't know how the wreck happened, but have ruled out alcohol and drugs.

Old U.S. 64 was closed in both directions for several hours.

Man won't be charged for shooting intruders

A Wilkes County man who called 911 to report hearing voices outside his building on Nov. 5 and then shot two intruders, killing one of them, will not be charged, authorities said.

Steve Joseph Whitley, 58, of North Wilkesboro acted in self-defense, said District Attorney Tom Horner.

Whitley shot and killed David Cynor, 23, who lived in the Mulberry community, and wounded Sara Seagraves, 22, of North Wilkesboro. Seagraves has been released from the hospital.

Whitley owns a building at 1532 Sparta Road where the shootings happened. On the afternoon of Nov. 4, Whitley found that someone had broken in, said Wilkes County Sheriff's Maj. David Carson. When Whitley couldn't get the building secured before nightfall, he decided to stay overnight, Carson said.

Early Saturday morning, Whitley shot Cynor and Seagraves, Carson said.

Seagraves was charged Friday with misdemeanor breaking and entering, and first-degree trespassing. She is scheduled to appear April 18 in Wilkes District Court.
