Q: What is the update on the Jimmy John's employee who was injured on his bicycle?
J.J.
A: Ibrahim "Ibe" Myers was admitted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center on Tuesday morning after having trouble breathing, and was found to have blood in his urine. As of Thursday, he was recovering from a urinary tract infection and was doing much better, said his brother, Michael Myers. Ibe (pronounced "Eeb") is also undergoing tests including an MRI while he is in the hospital to determine how he is progressing in his recuperation, Michael said.
Last June, Ibe, who is well-known in downtown Winston-Salem, was struck by a van while riding his bike without a helmet after he left work. He was critically injured and suffered brain damage, the extent of which is not yet known.
"He can mumble, he can almost talk sometimes, and he can scratch his nose, scratch his head and rub his eyes," Michael said. "If he doesn't want you doing something he can grab your hand and make you stop."
He is sometimes aware of his surroundings, but that comes and goes, Michael Myers said. He said that when he is released from Baptist, Ibe will return to Oak Forest Health and Rehabilitation, where he is frequently visited by family and friends.
Friends have set up a Facebook page called "Prayers for Ibe" to share get-well wishes and track his progress.
Q: Why does Time Warner Cable not use the same channel numbers for HD channels and just add the "-1" to the existing channels for HD channels? For example, why not make WXII, which is channel 11, 11-1 in high definition, and ESPN, which is channel 33, 33-1 for HD?
B.K.
A: Time Warner Cable's HD channel numbers aren't based on the channel numbers in the basic tier, which are the channels under 100. Instead, they are based on the digital cable numbers, which were standardized last year when TWC started the Common Digital Lineup across its different markets in the Carolinas.
The Common Digital Lineup is meant to help customers know where to find the same cable channel in different markets – so, if you were visiting a relative who has TWC elsewhere in the Carolinas, you'd know that channel 500 is going to be ESPN wherever you go.
That format also allowed TWC to group channels by category, such as all the news channels being in the 400 block and all the sports channels in the 500 block. The channels in the basic lineup are mostly in random order and vary from one market to another.
"Our research shows that customers like a lineup that is organized by category," said Scott Pryzwansky, a spokesman for TWC. "It makes it easier for customers to find programming they enjoy watching."
When a channel is available on Time Warner Cable in high definition, it can be found by adding a "1" to the beginning of the digital channel number for that channel. So ESPN is 1500 in high def.
