Basketball player J.T. Terrell leaving Wake Forest after DWI charge

J.T. Terrell's short-lived basketball career at Wake Forest is over.

Terrell, a talented but troubled 6-3 guard, was arrested early Saturday morning for driving while impaired and has resigned from the basketball team and withdrawn from the university

Terrell's attorney, Mike Grace of Winston-Salem, said Terrell was arrested by the Winston-Salem Police Department around 3 a.m. Saturday.

"Due to circumstances surrounding his arrest, along with other recent indicators, it is obvious to J.T. and his family that J.T. suffers from a serious medical condition that requires immediate attention,'' Grace said in a statement released by the Wake Forest sports media relations department. "Consequently, J.T. and his family have authorized me to inform the university, Athletic Director Ron Wellman and Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik of his intent, effective immediately, to resign from the men's basketball team and withdraw from Wake Forest University.''

Terrell, considered a cornerstone to Bzdelik's rebuilding efforts, played in all 32 games as a freshman, starting 18. He averaged 11.1 points a game, second most on the team to classmate Travis McKie, and made his greatest impact by scoring 32 points in the Deacons' 76-73 victory over Iowa in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

It was the most points by a freshman in the ACC last season.

Terrell expressed his regret in a statement released by Grace.

"I would like to offer my sincere apology to Wake Forest University and its fans, its coaching staff and, most importantly, my teammates for my terrible lack of judgment in this matter,'' Terrell stated. "I ask for your prayers and best wishes as I undertake the task of rebuilding my life over the next few months.

"With your continued support, I hope to one day both complete my college education and play basketball at some level.''
