RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr says he will run for the No. 2 position in the Republican leadership in the U.S. Senate after the 2012 elections.

Burr said Tuesday he will run for the Republican whip's job, which will be open with the retirement of Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl. The whip keeps vote counts of key legislation within the party's Senate caucus.

The Winston-Salem lawmaker says he'll concentrate on his current post as chief deputy whip and the legislative agenda in the year or so before the vote. Texas Sen. John Cornyn is also expected to run for the whip's post.

Burr was re-elected in 2010 to a second six-year term.

Washington-based political news organizations reported Burr's intentions Monday night.
