The real story
Ignorance is not bliss. It hurts others. The writer of the May 5 letter "Against more taxes" doesn't know the real story of Americans who are in need. I see them each week at Green Street Church ministries.
It would be a travesty to expect these people to be more responsible. They are doing the best that they can.

A beautiful event
Bravo UNC School of the Arts! The school outdid itself again with the nonpareil production of "Oklahoma!" Congratulations to each and everyone who contributed in any way to this beautiful event.
Winston-Salem is so privileged! Eat your heart out, Charlotte.

Not a necessity
The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school board wants students who play high-school sports to pay a $40 fee ("School employees say cuts would hurt," May 12). Those on reduced or free lunch or low income will not have to pay.
Sports is an extracurricular activity and not a necessity. This is another form of entitlement and puts the burden on the others who pay. This is one reason why our country is in trouble financially; too many entitlements.

Tax the rich
When people say, "Tax the rich more," what they are really saying is, "Give the government more authority to take away from them to pay for what I want." It is theft covered in pseudo-moral righteousness. It is class envy and class warfare.
Regardless of what financial stage people are in, we should always remember that it is their money, they earned it and deserve it. A person is not bad for making more money, but envy is one of the seven deadly sins. Demonizing a person for success is wrong. Punishing a person for his success is wrong. Not living within your means is wrong. Not living within your means, then demonizing the job creators and demanding that they forfeit more of their money so that the drunken spending party may continue is wrong.
Liberals love to divide our nation, be it via race or class or age. Liberals love to tax and spend with no end in sight. Call them out on it. Once you call them out on their political theater, then we can actually start talking about how to solve the problems of the budget.
