Jewel Cherry, a longtime administrator at Forsyth Technical Community College, has been named vice president of student services at the school.

Cherry was chosen after a nationwide search. She said in a statement that one of her main priorities is enhancing services for Forsyth Tech's online students.

"Anything we do for our students face to face, I want to work toward offering that to our online students as well," she said.

Cherry has been at Forsyth Tech since 1977 and had served as dean of enrollment and student services.

Wake Forest's South Hall certified eco-friendly by national group

Wake Forest's eco-friendly South Hall has been awarded a Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

The 67,000-square-foot building on the south side of campus opened last August. Its features include lots of natural light, solar panels, dual-flush toilets and low-flow showerheads.

The national LEED designation standard was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. Five key areas are measured and must be met before a building can achieve certification: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

Wake's golf center is also Gold certified. It is seeking LEED certification for its new welcome center.

Two fellows to help WSSU increase commitment to energy savings

Winston-Salem State University will increase its commitment to energy savings this year with the help of two fellows.

Michelle Williams, a recent MBA graduate from WSSU's school of Business and Economics, and Matthew Peck, a Wake Forest University School of Business MBA student, have received summer fellowships from the Environmental Defense Fund's Climate Corps Public Sector to develop energy saving projects that will address WSSU's needs.

EDF Climate Corps Public Sector places students on campuses to identify practical ways to reduce energy use and save budget dollars. Working with WSSU's sustainability staff, Williams and Peck will develop a custom energy efficiency plan for WSSU. The program will run from May 23 to July 29.
