IN EDUCATION
•Keith Chostner has graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. He is the son of Dr. Jerry Chostner of Winston-Salem and Rosalind Gentry of Myrtle Beach, S.C.
•Catherine Sanders Dallas was recently awarded three merit-based academic scholarships, and a separate award, at Reynolds High School's annual Class Day: the Nell and Spencer Waggoner Scholarship; the Jeanette Anderson Parker Memorial Scholarship; the Bunny and Bill Davis Highland Presbyterian Scholarship; and the Reynolds High School German Award for Excellence and Perseverance.
Catherine's numerous other achievements include the Girl Scouts of America Gold Award; one of North Carolina's 25 student representatives to attend the Conference on National Affairs in Black Mountain in 2010; president of both the Reynolds High School German Club and the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools National German Honor Society; and was a three-year varsity letterman on the Reynolds Women's Varsity Field Hockey team. She will attend Vanderbilt University this fall.
Catherine is the daughter of John Sanders Dallas III and Shari White Dallas of Winston-Salem, and the granddaughter of J. Sanders Dallas Jr. and Vicki Smith Dallas (deceased), and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Carson White, all of High Point.
•John Elliott has been inducted into the Dialectic and Philanthropic Society at UNC-Chapel Hill. Di Phi is the debating and literary society founded shortly after the founding of the university in 1795.
Elliott is a junior with a double major in linguistics and international studies, and has been selected to participate in a summer study-abroad program in Mexico sponsored by the Institute for the Study of the Americas at UNC. He is a 2008 graduate of Reynolds High School.
•Sara Allen Harper, a 2007 alumna of Reynolds High School, has graduated with a B.S. in architecture from the University of Virginia. She also received the Edgar F. Shannon Award of the "Z" Society, the highest award in the Architecture School.
Harper is the daughter of Lars and Mary Harper, and the great-granddaughter of Jens Fredrick Larson, architect of the Wake Forest University campus.
•Ryan A. Hennessee has been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and has graduated summa cum laude from Duke University, where he majored in economics. He is to begin employment with Bank of America-Merrill Lynch in New York City in July.
Hennessee is a son of Winston-Salem native Scott and Mary Holleran Hennessee of Rocky Mount, and a grandson of Nick and Betty Spainhour Hennessee of Winston-Salem.
•Lily Jewel Jones has graduated from Summit School and received the following honors: Ranking Scholar, English Award for Excellence, Phil Wood Science Award, Chinese Award for Excellence, William Carr Drama Award, and the Loma Hopkins Music Award. She will attend Reagan High School as a sophomore.
Lily is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Beverly N. Jones III of Winston-Salem.
•Jonathan Matthews of Winston-Salem, a student of Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, Va., has been named to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges, one of the most highly regarded and long-standing honors programs in the nation.
•Christopher Money was awarded a $1,500 scholarship by the Stokes County Retired School Personnel recently during West Stokes' Awards Day Program. The scholarship was created by the SCRSP and is awarded annually to a Stokes County senior who plans to seek a degree in some field of education.
Christopher is an honors graduate of West Stokes High School and in the fall will be attending Catawba College, where he plans to major in education. He is the son of Randall and Kimberly Money of King.
•Lora Smith has been named to the Chancellor's List at Appalachian State University, where she is majoring in communication studies with a political science minor. She is the president of Appalachian Communicators and secretary for both Lambda Pi Eta and Tau Sigma honor societies.
Smith is the daughter of Bill and Cindy Smith of Advance.
•Tiffany Grace Ward has received her Juris Doctor degree with an Advocacy Track from Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law. She has also been awarded membership in the national society The Order of Barristers, which recognizes outstanding performance in the art of advocacy.
Ward is a 2002 graduate of Lexington Senior High School and received her bachelor's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 2006. She is the daughter of Stuart and Grace Ward, sister of Jennifer Ward, and granddaughter of Elaine Ward and the late Dwight Ward.
•Two area athletes have been awarded scholarships by Pop Warner Little Scholars Inc., the nation's largest and oldest youth football, cheer and dance organization. Semassa Boko of the Winston-Salem Indians received a $5,000 scholarship, and Shelby Cecil of the Kernersville Raiders received a $1,000 scholarship.
•The following local students are Crosby Scholar Scholarship winners:
Desiree Porter of Glenn High School is the 2010-11 recipient of the Les and Evelyn Riley Scholarship. The scholarship is a one-time $1,200 college scholarship. Desiree will enroll at Elon University to study finance. She is the daughter of Jonathan and Denise Porter.
Meredith McCliment of Glenn High School is the recipient of the Fulton Carolina Medal. The Fulton Scholar is awarded a one-time $1,500 college scholarship. Meredith will enroll at UNC-Chapel Hill and is the daughter of Scott and Kathy McCliment.
Emily Davis of Reagan High School is the recipient of the Mommie J Scholarship. The scholarship is worth $1,200. Emily will enroll at UNC Greensboro and is the daughter of Andy and Catherine Davis.
•Seven representatives from Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools will be a part of the inaugural class in the Piedmont Triad Leadership Academy. The academy is a paid, one-year program funded by North Carolina's portion of the federal Race to the Top grant and is intended to help individuals earn principal licensure and an administrative job in a high-needs school.
The representatives are Michelle Breen, a third-grade teacher at Diggs-Latham Elementary School; Jeff Brookshire, a social studies teacher at North Forsyth High School; Ronnie Christian, the coordinator of the GEAR-UP program at Atkins and Glenn high schools; Cassandra Dobson, a fourth-grade teacher at North Hills Elementary School; Scarlet Evans, an English and social studies teacher at Hill Middle School; Keisha Gabriel, a social studies instructional coach for the district; and Ian Olsen, a biology teacher at Atkins High School.
The PTLA is a partnership among UNC-Greensboro, WS/FCS, Alamance Burlington School System, Asheboro City Schools, Guilford County Schools and the Piedmont Triad Education Consortium.
IN THE ARTS
•Phyllis Hemrick Dunning of Winston-Salem has been awarded the 2011 Giannini Society Award by the UNC School of the Arts. She was recognized at the UNCSA's commencement in May, and cited for "her passion and dedication" to the school.
A graduate of Salem College, Dunning currently is an active member of the UNCSA Associates (the school's volunteer organization) and its board, and the Giannini Society and its advisory committee. Since retirement, she has channeled her creative energy and dedication to the arts to UNCSA and many community organizations.
Dunning serves on many community boards, including the board of visitors of Salem Academy and College, Piedmont Opera Theatre, and the Carolina Chamber Symphony Players. She is active in support of the Winston-Salem Symphony, Reynolda House Museum of American Art, and other area arts groups
IN THE MILITARY
•Army Pvt. Robert E. Stinson has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. He graduated in 2010 from Redbank Valley High School in New Bethlehem, Pa., and is the nephew of Joseph Mansfield of Bethlehem, Pa., and son of Melissa Daniels of Clemmons.
•Army Pfc. Nikki M. Thompson has graduated from Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla. She graduated in 2001 from North Surry High School.
Thompson is the daughter of William Thompson of Mount Airy and Angla Thompson of Winston-Salem.
IN SCOUTING
•David Moore, a member of Boy Scout Troop 920 at Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, has been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout.
For his Eagle project, David constructed an 18th-century-styled back country frontier garden with a Native American section at Summit School. This area will provide hands-on education for elementary school students concurrent with their studies of Colonial and Native American time periods. He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow.
David graduated from Summit School. He is a sophomore and honor student at Woodberry Forest School in Woodberry Forest, Va., and is the son of Rob and Angel Moore of Winston-Salem.
•Rebecca Murray of Girl Scout Troop 40226 has earned her Girl Scout Gold Award. To qualify, each girl must dedicate at least 65 hours to planning and implementing her project, which must benefit the community and have lasting impact. The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest-earned award for Girl Scouts in grades 9-12.
For her project, Rebecca created more than 100 art packets for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. The art packets offered children a fun activity and allowed them to get their minds off of difficult circumstances. She also organized a dance that benefited several charitable organizations throughout the community, including the Ronald McDonald House.
Rebecca is the daughter of Craige and Sonja Murrary of Winston-Salem.
