Friends organize day of music, art to support injured bicyclist Ibrahim Myers

Friends of Ibrahim Myers, a critically injured bicyclist known for his love of downtown Winston-Salem, plan a fundraiser next month to help pay his bills.

The Super Mega Ibrahim Explosion will be held July 10 at 3 p.m. at the Millennium Center. The cost is $7.

Myers, 36, has been in critical condition at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center since crashing into a van while riding his bike down Glade Street in the West End on June 4. He was not wearing a helmet.

Charges against the driver of the van, Kimberly Anna Hundley, 49, of Winston-Salem, have not been filed but are pending, police said.

The benefit is being organized by Dave Owen, who has been friends with Myers since they were students at Parkland High School in the 1990s.

"We were just punk-rock kids," Owen said.

Owen has been a concert promoter for more than 10 years and decided to put together an event to help pay not only Myers' hospital bills but other costs, such as rent, that Myers can't pay while he is in the hospital.

"It's going to be a rock-fest," Owen said. There will be two stages set up, with music performed by such artists as Jews & Catholics, the bo-Stevens, Snuzz and Mutant League.

There will also be a silent arts-and-crafts auction and a raffle that will include tickets for downtown events and restaurant deals. The raffle tickets will go on sale Friday at Krankies Coffee, 211 E. Third St., and at Recreation Billiards, 412 W. Fourth St. Tickets are $5 apiece, or $20 for six.

Owen said plans for the benefit have not been completed, and he's open to suggestions on what should be included. Owen can be reached at coalition7@aol.com.

Owen started a page on Facebook to promote the benefit and invited 200 to 300 friends. Those friends have spread the word, and now more than 2,600 people have been invited. As of Tuesday afternoon, more than 350 said they plan to attend.

Owen said the groundswell of support for Myers isn't surprising given how many people know him.

"You can't through a rock downtown without hitting someone who knows Ibe," Owen said.
