Winston-Salem fire fighters are responding to an apartment fire off Robinhood Road just north of Polo Road.
The fire is at the Sherwood Ridges apartments, on Ashlawn Court, started shortly after 4 p.m. Wednesday. When fire fighters arrived, smoke and flames were coming through the building's roof, said Assistant Fire Chief Freddie Broome.
The fire has caused extensive damage to half of one of the apartment buildings, involving several units. Flames were clearly visible on the back of the building and billows of black smoke were sent wafting over the northern part of the city about 4:30 p.m.
No one was injured, Broome said. About 60 residents stood outside the building and watched fire fighters work. It's not clear how many people were displaced by the fire. Broome said he didn't know if residents of the apartment where the fire started were at home at the time.
Frederick Huffin, a resident of a nearby building, said that a property manager knocked on doors and ordered everyone out of their apartments when the fire started.
He said that a maintenance man was the first person to see the fire and reported it.
"I saw the flames when I came outside," Huffin said. "It was coming through the roof."
