IN EDUCATION
•Zeta, Beta Mu, and Beta Nu Chapters comprising Eta State of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, a teaching sorority founded in 1929 in Austin Texas, recently held their joint annual spring luncheon at Forsyth Country Club. Eight new members were inducted.
The new members for Zeta Chapter are Cheryl Taylor, Portia Waters, and Judith Williard; Beta Mu new members are Kristin Bennett and Heather Strickland; and Beta Nu new members are Sharon Holmes, Nancy Hoover, and Penny Lundgren.
•Anna-Carrie Beck of Winston-Salem has accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She will be recognized during an induction ceremony this fall on the UNC Greensboro campus.
•Zoë A. Detter is the recipient of the Reynolds High School Class of 1968's annual Memorial Scholarship. Nancy Gheesling Streblow, a member of the Class of 1968, presented the award to Zoë at the school's Class Day assembly. The scholarship is managed by The Winston-Salem Foundation and carries an award of $5,000.
Zoë is president of the Reynolds Girls' Club and a member of the National Honor Society. She has been active in the school's Literature Society, and was a member of the track and field teams. She served on the staff of the school yearbook for three years. As a community volunteer, she has worked at the Humane Society, and has been an English-as-second-language tutor.
Zoë has been accepted at Appalachian State University, and plans to become an English teacher. She is the daughter of Jan Detter and the late Dan Detter of Winston-Salem
•Sally Fallanca is the recipient of the 2011 Edward Kent Welch Memorial Scholarship. The Scholarship is valued at $2000, and is given annually to a Mount Tabor High School senior who will attend UNC Chapel Hill.
•Emily Gryder has been awarded a scholarship by The Old Town Woman's Club. She will graduate from Reagan High School this spring. Emily is the daughter of Kristine and Scott Gryder of Pfafftown.
•Anna Hattle of Tobaccoville and a student at Hanes Magnet Middle School, has been named a Duke University Talent Identification Program (TIP) - Bevan Scholar 2011. She is one of the 41 Bevan Scholars who received scholarship to attend summer studies at Duke University.
Bevan Scholarships are given each year to the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search participants who earn the highest scores on the SAT or ACT. Only seven students from North Carolina scored a perfect score in one or more section of the SAT or ACT test this year. Anna is the only student from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools to do so.
•Katlyn Paige Kennedy has made dean's list for the 2011 spring semester at UNC Wilmington, where she was also appointed Sisterhood Chair for Delta Zeta. She is a 2010 graduate of East Forsyth High School, and the daughter of Kenneth and Stephanie Kennedy of Belews Creek.
• Morgan Francis Kist has graduated from Haverford College in Pennsylvania. He received a bachelor's degree in mathematics, with a minor in chemistry.
While at Haverford, Kist was involved in a variety of campus activities. He ran for the NCAA Division III 2010 National Champion Haverford Men's Cross Country team, and was named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll in the fall of 2010. He also worked as a program assistant for the Young Alumni Relations Office at Haverford, designing the Young Alumni website and developing fund raising strategies.
Kist is a graduate of Mount Tabor High School, and the son of Werner and Laura Jane Kist of Winston Salem.
•Ryan Lee Lindley has been named to the dean's list for the spring 2011 semester at UNC Charlotte, where he is a sophomore majoring in kinesiology, and member of The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. He is a 2010 graduate of Reagan High School, and the son of Jerry and Sandra Lindley of Pfafftown.
•Alexander W. Mitchell has graduated from Bucknell University with a Bachelor of Arts in history. He is a 2007 graduate of Mount Tabor High School, and the son of Peter and Susan Mitchell of Winston Salem.
•Carson Meyer has graduated from Christ School near Asheville. While at Christ School, Meyer was a member of the swim team, and named Most Valuable Player and awarded All-Conference honors. He will attend East Carolina University in the fall.
Meyer is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Mark L. Meyer of Winston-Salem.
•Sarah K. Satterwhite, a psychology major, has graduated from cum laude with a Bachelor of Science from Davidson College.
While at Davidson, Satterwhite was president of Psi Chi national honor society in psychology, and served as a mentor and tutor for the psychology department. She played club-level field hockey, and was involved with the ECOTEAM and Building Tomorrow group raising money to build schools in Africa. She will continue her education in graduate school at UNC Greensboro, studying psychology.
Satterwhite is a graduate of Reynolds High School, and the daughter of Dr. Bill and Katie Satterwhite of Winston-Salem.
•Trey Tuttle has been named to the spring semester 2011 Dean's List at UNC Charlotte, where he is pursuing a degree in construction management. He is a 2010 graduate of North Forsyth High School, and the son of Wanda and Danny Tuttle of Winston-Salem.
•The North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Pre-College Program from Winston-Salem State University placed third overall in the recent statewide Mathematics and Science Education Network Day competition held at Fayetteville State University.

Woodson School, and Tyler Jordan, Meadowlark Middle School, in Egg Drop/Middle School.
IN THE ARTS
• Daniel Combs an 8th grader at Hanes Middle School, recently won first place in his age category (Upper Intermediate) in the Ruby and George Moxley Piano Competition. He also played in the Winners Concert at Salem College, and was awarded a trophy as well as a $75 prize.
Daniel has taken piano since age seven, and currently trains under Federico Pivetta. He will be attending Reynolds High School in the fall.
IN MEDICINE
•Dr. G. Bennett Smith, a Mount Airy dentist, has received the UNC Dental Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award for 2011. The award honors exceptional service to the profession of dentistry, as well as a significant impact on the UNC Dental Alumni Association.
Smith is a 1983 graduate of the UNC School of Dentistry. He has held positions with various dental related organizations including president of the Blue Ridge Dental Society and NC Dental Society Board of Trustees. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Dentistry International, Academy of General Dentistry, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists.
Smith actively participates in the NC Missions of Mercy clinics and other volunteer dental clinics. He has practiced general dentistry in Mount Airy since 1990.
IN PUBLIC SERVICE
• Velvet Marie Motsinger has been presented the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Conservation Award. The award recognizes her conservation record which includes working to launch the Yadkin Riverkeeper, a non-profit organization with a mission to protect and improve the Yadkin Pee Dee River Basin through education, advocacy and action.
•The North Carolina Department of Transportation recently recognized "Adopt-A-Highway" groups that have participated in the program for twenty consecutive years (1991-2011). The following local participating groups have made a significant contribution to preserving the beauty and cleanliness of North Carolina's roadsides:
Davidson County: Macedonia Methodist Church and Janet and Jack Everhart.
Forsyth County: Knights of Columbus Council 2829; Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church; Boy Scouts of America Troop 922; and Church of Jesus Christ – LDS.
Watauga County: Tweetsie Railroad and Ruritan Club of Deep Gap.
Wilkes County: Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Mt. Pleasant Ruritan.
Yadkin County: Mt. Carmel Friends Meeting.
IN OTHER AREAS
• Tadelro L. Brown of Winston-Salem was one of thirteen Wake Forest Law Alumni recently admitted into the Bar of the U.S. Supreme Court. The oath was administered in May during the court's session.
Brown is a vice president and estate planning consultant at Wells Fargo Bank.
•A rededication ceremony of the Wright Court House and Richmond Court House Historical Marker was given by the Old North State Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in May. The sign was restored, after being hit by a vehicle, then placed east of the Yadkin River bridge on Highway 67. The marker indicates the Old Surry County Court House sites, which served all of northwest North Carolina from 1771 through 1789.
