IN EDUCATION
- Brittany Ann Bodenhamer has graduated from Surry Community College, where she received an Associate in Science and an Associate in Arts degree with honors. She will attend Salem College this fall to study chemistry.
Bodenhamer is the daughter of Dale and Martha Bodenhamer of King.
- Jordan B. Bond of Winston-Salem, a member of the Class of 2014, has been named to the honor roll at Phillips Academy for the 2011 spring term.
- Joanna Braeckel has been named to the Dean's List for the 2011 spring semester at the University of Alabama, where she is a senior majoring in public relations. She has accepted a summer public relations internship with the American Diabetes Association.
Braeckel is a 2008 graduate of Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School and is the daughter of Joe and Mary Ann Braeckel of Winston-Salem.
- Mary E. Cox has received her Master of Public Health and Graduate Certificate in international health from New York Medical College.
Cox is a 2007 graduate of Wake Forest University and the daughter of David and Lisa Cox of Pfafftown.
- Matthew Kent Eaton has received a $1,000 scholarship from the Piedmont USBC. He will be attending UNC Charlotte in the fall and plans to major in engineering.
Eaton is a 2011 graduate of West Forsyth High School and the son of Kent and Janet Eaton of Winston Salem.
- Samantha Marie Hall is a recipient of the Braxton Craven Endowed Scholarship to Duke University, which includes a full four-year tuition grant. The award recognizes her strong academic record and contributions to her school and community.
Hall is a 2011 graduate of North Davidson Senior High School. She was the 2011 class valedictorian and served as co-captain of the Quiz Bowl Team, secretary for the Junior Civitans and a member of the National Honor Society. She was an AP Scholar with Distinction and was selected as a National Merit Finalist.
Hall is the daughter of Ricky and Nancy Hall of Midway.
- Lisa Marie Miller has accepted a photography fellowship in Birmingham, Ala. She will be working with Time's Cooking Light magazine.
Miller has a B.F.A. in photography with a minor in graphic design. She is a 2011 graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah and the daughter of Lanny and Kay Miller of Walkertown.
- Nicholas Norman and Jennifer Shore are winners of the East Bend Ruritan Steve Coram Memorial Scholarship.
Norman is the son of Gayle and Rex Norman and will attend UNC Chapel Hill majoring in bio-medical engineering. Shore is the daughter of Tommy and Tammy Shore and will attend Meredith College majoring in music education. She is also the winner of a National Ruritan Scholarship.
Bryan Richardson and John Richardson are winners in the Anna Bullock Scholarship Program. The scholarship is sponsored by ARC Supply Co. in Durham and is worth $2,000.
Bryan and John both attend Faith Academy. In the fall, Bryan plans to attend Forsyth Technical Community College, and John plans to attend UNC Chapel Hill. They are the sons of John C. Richardson of Winston-Salem.
- Jeremy W. Sexton, a rising junior at Reynolds High School, won a number of awards in Latin and Classical Studies during the spring of 2011.
For the second consecutive year, Jeremy won a gold medal on the National Latin Exam. This year his gold medal was further distinguished as a Perfect Paper. Of the 4,296 students who took the Latin Prose III exam worldwide, only 27 Perfect Papers were awarded. Also, for the second consecutive year, Jeremy earned a gold medal in the Medusa Mythology Examination; a gold medal in the National Mythology Examination; and a gold medal in the National Roman Civilization Exam sponsored by the National Junior Classical League.
Jeremy was also a member of the Reynolds Advanced Certamen Team (the Latin quiz bowl) which took first place in the N.C. Junior Classical League (JCL) state competition held in April. Also at the state convention, he tied for first place overall in the Mythology academic test, placed first in the Multimedia Audio competition, won a second-place medal in the Multimedia PowerPoint category, and earned fourth place in the Poetry competition. Jeremy's short story, "Antrum Canum," placed first in the Creative Writing category for 10th grade at both the state and national levels of JCL competition.
Jeremy is the son of Drs. Mark and Rebecca Sexton of Winston-Salem.
- Elisa D. Wallace has graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a M.F.A. in professional writing. She is the daughter of Daniel and Renza Wallace of Winston-Salem.
- Benjamin Winikoff has graduated from Wake Forest University with a B.A., a major in history and minors in political science and biology. He was also treasurer of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Winikoff is a 2004 graduate of Summit School and a 2007 graduate of St. James School in Maryland. He is the son of Linda and Stuart Winikoff of Winston-Salem.
- Four Winston-Salem-area residents have graduated from Wake Forest University School of Law: Christopher Thomas Ward, Julie M. Watson and Jonathan Derrick Williams all of Winston-Salem, and Lauren-Maree McPhail of Mount Airy. Williams received the E. McGruder Faris Memorial Award and $200 cash, which is given to the student exhibiting the highest standards of character, leadership, and scholarship.
IN MEDICINE
- Ricky R. Sides has been appointed to the N.C. Board of Chiropractic Examiners for a two-year term. He previously served on the board from 1989 to 1993, and as its president from 1991 to 1993.
Sides is an active member of the N.C. Chiropractic Association (NCCA), and currently serves as the chairman of the Medicare Committee for the NCCA. He serves on the board of directors of the Trinity Center, the Winston-Salem Rotary and the Forsyth County Board of Health.
Sides earned the Doctor of Chiropractic degree from the National University of Health Sciences in Lombar, Ill. He was awarded the designation of Certified Chiropractic Wellness Specialist by the National Wellness Institute on June 4. He also served as commissioner of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services for North Carolina under then-Gov. Jim Martin.
IN PUBLIC SERVICE
- Holden Anne Ehlinger recently attended the North Carolina site of the Hugh O'Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar where she and nearly 90 other young leaders represented high schools from the Piedmont Triad and the western part of the state. The leadership seminar provides an opportunity for rising high school juniors to interact with leaders in business, government, education and other professions to discuss present and future issues facing our society. HOBY participants are challenged to perform at least 100 hours of community service within 12 months following the seminar.
Holden is a student at Calvary Baptist Day School. She is the daughter of Lanie and Tim Ehlinger.
- Emily D. Williard was recently appointed a Grand Officer and a member of the Junior State Executive Committee for the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, a Masonic youth-service organization that teaches leadership training through community service.
Emily has been a member of the Winston-Salem Assembly since 2006, and has held numerous offices in her local assembly. She has also served as the North Carolina Grand Representative to Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nevada, and Florida, and is a recipient of the Grand Cross of Color service award, the organization's highest honor, given for outstanding service.
Emily is a student at Reagan High School, where she is involved with the Student Government Association, and is an officer in the Air Force JROTC program. She is also working to become a member of the school's cross country team. She is the daughter of Alan and Dannielle Williard of Winston-Salem.
IN SCOUTING
- Tyriq Amon Evans, a member of Boy Scout Troop 916 of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
For his Eagle Scout project, Tyriq created a serenity garden in the foyer of Love and Faith Christian Fellowship Church in Greensboro. The project consisted of building picnic tables, wooden benches and preparing flower beds that will be used for various meetings, community events and by the staff.
Tyriq's other Boy Scout activities include serving as the troop chaplain and patrol leader. He is also a member of the Order of the Arrow.
Tyriq attended East Forsyth Middle School, where he was a member of the National Junior Honor Society, the National Academic League, Crosby Scholars and the East Forsyth band, for which he played the euphonium, and was chosen to play with the 2011 Piedmont Wind Symphony. He is a member of Love and Faith Christian Fellowship in Kernersville, where he serves as a youth usher and works in the children's church.
Tyriq is the son of Tanya M. Evans and the grandson of Carol C. Miller. He will be attending East Forsyth High School in the fall.
- Gaired Elliote Jordan has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 898 at Union Baptist Church.
Gaired's Eagle Scout project consisted of rehabilitating the area around the playground of the Ronald McDonald House. He replaced the existing damaged plant life from last winter with plants better suited for the climate. He organized the Scouts from his troop to help him in cleaning the area of debris and dead plants.
As a Boy Scout, Gaired has earned 26 merit badges including in Citizenship in the Nation, Emergency Preparedness, Wilderness Survival and Environmental Science. He is a rising senior and honor student at Parkland IB Magnet School.
Gaired is the third Eagle Scout in his family and the son of Selvyn and Lydia Jordan.
IN OTHER AREAS
- Alfred G. Adams of Winston-Salem, Valene Franco of Winston-Salem and Rep. Sarah S. Stevens of Mount Airy have been awarded the 2011 NCBA Citizen Lawyer Award by the North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA).
Adams practices with Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, and served on the NCBA Board of Governors from 1987-90.
Franco is the managing attorney for the Family Law Department of Legal Aid of North Carolina's Winston-Salem office. She is a past president of the Winston-Salem Bar Association and currently serves as president of the Forsyth County Bar Association and 21st Judicial District Bar.
Stevens represents District 90 (Surry and Alleghany counties) in the N.C. House of Representatives, where she is serving her second term.
