Kathy Proctor, who is studying biotechnology at Forsyth Technical Community College, will be seated near First Lady Michelle Obama during the State of the Union address tonight.
Proctor met President Obama in December when he toured a biotech lab at the school. He listened intently to her story about getting laid off from a furniture factory.
“I felt like he listened,” Proctor said Monday night. “And I feel like he really cares about getting people back to work through education. He's genuine.”
Her connection with Obama didn't end there. Last week, officials from the White House called her and asked a few questions about her background. Not longer afterward, she got another call from the White House.
“They said the President and First Lady were extending an invitation for me to go to the speech. I said, 'Would I? Yes!’”.
She and her twin daughters, Meghan and Amanda who are 18, are flying to Washington today and will return Wednesday. Her expenses will be paid, Proctor said.
