Juno and Dodger, two of R.V. Wakefield's tracking dogs, showed off their skills at finding lost pets during a demonstration with my beagle, Darwin.
We met at Triad Park in Colfax, where I rubbed Darwin with a piece of gauze. Julie Harris, the Winston-Salem Journal's newsroom research librarian, spirited Darwin away through some woods, across a park road to a pavilion.
It took Juno less than five minutes to find Darwin. She kept Wakefield apprised by the way she held her head, ears and tail to let Wakefield know they were on the right trail.
Then it was Dodger's turn. This time, it took longer because Harris and Darwin went farther away. But he still found his target in less than 10 minutes.
Darwin did very well in not giving away his location while Juno and Dodger trailed him. He waited until the Dobermans found him to say "hello" in his special and loud beagle way.
Wakefield charges $100 for the first hour to track a missing pet but usually finds it within the hour. He can be reached at Tri-County Trackers, 336-407-5549.
