Quitman County Sheriff Steve Newton says his chief deputy likely saved the life of an 88-year-old man Wednesday by using on Taser on him.
Chief Deputy Javier Garcia used the Taser on the man after he threatened to kill himself with a knife. The man was not seriously injured and was later sent to a Columbus hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The incident occurred in Georgetown’s Chattahoochee Estates subdivision. According to a press release from the sheriff’s department, when Garcia arrived at approximately 12:40 p.m. Wednesday he found the wheelchair-bound man with a knife to this throat. On multiple occasions he asked Garcia to shoot him because he wanted to die.
“Deputy Garcia skillfully talked with the male and inched close enough to use his Taser to disarm the man; once tased the man dropped the knife,” Newton stated in the release.
Garcia said he was fortunate to have a Taser available.
“Otherwise I would have been unable to disarm Mr. Lockett before he hurt himself,” he stated in the release.
The man was taken into custody and brought before Magistrate Judge Andrew Bennett. Bennett issued a detention order and the man was then sent to the hospital.
According to the release, the man became agitated and violent while arguing with his adult daughter and broke the front windows of his residence and destroyed several items in the house including his television set before threatening to kill himself.
