WFU, Cisco join on communication effort
Wake Forest University and Cisco are working together on a project that will allow students, faculty and staff to link with one another and collaborators around the world. Wake Forest will be the first university in the world to unite members of its campus community with a site-wide license for Cisco WebEx Meeting Center.
The WebEx functions include high-quality video, file transfer, chat and voice conferencing; session recording, desktop sharing, application sharing and a virtual whiteboard.
WebEx was tested at Wake Forest from May to October 2010. In one case, a traveling faculty member conducted a class that he normally would have canceled. In another, a class of MBA students were able to collaborate on group assignments outside of class.
Faculty members have used online tools in the past, but those efforts were often hampered by unreliable technology and poor video quality. WebEx will allow for more widespread collaboration.
It will be rolled out on campus through the remainder of the spring semester.
High Point adding student housing
High Point University will add more student housing to accommodate the surge in students attending the school.
The Townhome Community, which is scheduled to be completed in August 2012, will include 11 2-½ story buildings that will house about 300 students.
Each of the 2,300-2,700 square-foot town homes will have six bedrooms, 4½ baths, a complete kitchen, dining area, laundry room and commons room. A meeting house, with an exercise facility, study room, kitchen and gathering area, is also part of the community.
Frank L. Blum Construction will be the contractor for the Townhome Community.
