Pickles and hot dogs from Winston-Salem drew praise in a new "Best of America" issue of Reader's Digest.
The poll — in the May issue of the magazine, which is out now — lists the UNC School of the Arts' "Fighting Pickle" as the second-most-lovable college mascot, coming in behind the Purple Cow from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
"We are dill-lighted that our Fighting Pickle has won the hearts of so many," said Marla Carpenter, the director of media relations for UNCSA, "and we relish the opportunity that it gives us to take the story of the School of the Arts to millions of Reader's Digest readers."
The Fighting Pickle has one of the easier jobs in the college mascot world because UNCSA has no sports teams.
J.S. Pulliam Barbeque won for best hot dog in the South. In February, that restaurant — which celebrated its 100th anniversary last year — got that same honor from Every Day With Rachael Ray magazine, which is published by the Reader's Digest Association. The Rachael Ray article brought Pulliam to Reader's Digest's attention, said Karen Reynolds, a publicist for the magazine.
Pulliam is closed on Mondays, and owner Mark Flynt could not be reached for comment.
North Carolina also received honors in some other categories, including the annual National Hollerin' Contest in Spivey's Corner being listed as one of the "Best Throwdowns" in America. SAS Software in Cary was listed as the best place to work, based on an extensive list of perks for employees.
The city of Greensboro won a $10,000 cash prize for having one of the top "Cheering Sections," based on people voting online for their favorite cities at Reader's Digest's website, rd.com. The prize money will be donated to local chapters of the United Way and The Salvation Army.
