l Rebecca Jane Gall has received the Clay Lancaster Memorial Prize in Historic Preservation for excellence in the study of the history of American architecture. The memorial prize was created in memory of Lancaster, an architectural historian from Kentucky.

Gall is a graduate of Reynolds High School and the University of Mary Washington, and is currently a graduate student in Historic Preservation at the University of Kentucky. She is the daughter of Susan Balde Avery and David E. Gall, both of Winston-Salem.

 

l Christopher G. Wells has graduated from Stanford Law School. He is a 2006 graduate of Yale University, and a 2002 graduate of Mount Tabor High School. He is the son of Janet and Mike Wells of Winston-Salem.

 

l Kayla Edwards and Cody Evans are recipients of the 2010 Bowman Gray Stadium Racing Ladies Auxiliary Scholarship. Each scholarship is worth $500.

Kayla is a 2010 graduate of West Stokes High School, and is pursuing a career in radiation therapy at Forsyth Technical Community College. She is the daughter of Barry and Dora Edwards of Pinnacle.

Cody is a 2010 graduate of West Stokes High School, and is pursing a career in automotive systems technology at Surry Community College. He is the son of Mike and Cindy Evans of King.

 

l Brittany E. Cannino of Winston Salem has become a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, a national leadership and honors organization at UNC Greensboro. Sigma Alpha Lambda is dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement, and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional fulfillment.

 

l Joseph Reid of Winston-Salem was recently awarded a $10,000 KPMG Foundation Minority Doctoral Scholarship by the KPMG Foundation. The scholarship is part of the KPMG Foundation’s efforts to increase diversity in business schools.

The PhD Project, a program created by KPMG in 1994, recruits minority professionals from business into doctoral programs in all business disciplines, and attacks the root cause of minority under-representation in corporate jobs: historically, very few minority college students study business as an entry to a corporate career. Diversifying the faculty will attract more minorities to study business and better prepare all students to function in a diverse workforce.

 

l Molly Spaugh has won First Community Bank’s inaugural online scholarship contest, in which she was asked to describe, in 160 characters or less, what attending high school was like. The scholarship is worth $1,000.

Molly recently graduated from Reynolds High School and will be attending UNC Asheville this fall.

IN THE ARTS

l The Piedmont Photography Club recently held its annual awards dinner.

First place went to the following: Chad Wilcox, Advanced Color Print, for Together; Sinh Nguyen, Advanced Color Digital, for My Heros; Bob Huffman, Advanced Black and White Print, for Mile High Bridge; Spencer Colquhoun, Advanced Black and White Digital, for All In a Day’s Work; Bet Wilson, Intermediate Color Digital, for Lowtide Sunrise; Bet Wilson, Intermediate Color Print, for Swingin; and Bill Cowden, Intermediate Black and White Digital, for Horses.

 

lD’ Walla Simmons-Burke, director of choral and vocal studies at Winston-Salem State University, will be one of four national conductors for the 2010 concert for the 105 Voices of History Choir program at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts this month. She will be conducting works by African-American composers.

Simmons-Burke has been director of choral and vocal studies, and coordinator of the choral, vocal and piano area of the Fine Arts Department at WSSU for 20 years. She is the founder of three of the four choral ensembles at the university: Winston-Salem State University Women, Winston-Salem State University Men and the Winston-Salem State University Burke Singers.

Simmons-Burke has performed with and conducted several symphony orchestras, including conducting the New England Symphony and New England Symphony Chorale at Carnegie Hall. She returned to Carnegie Hall this January to conduct the WSSU Choir in concert, and she has also traveled internationally with her choral ensembles, including a performance and recording with the Dvoƙák Symphony in Prague, Czech Republic, which was pre-nominated in five categories for Grammy Awards this year.

For the third year, the 105 Voices of History program will showcase four conductors and 105 students representing the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU’s) in the nation. JaKenya Pearson, alto, and Brandon Gaines, tenor, will represent WSSU in the choir. The program was founded in 2008 by Partners Achieving Success, a nonprofit organization based in Maryland that focuses on enhancing resources and building capacity to assist student and professional development at the nation’s
HBCU’s.

 

l The North Carolina Arts Council has announced grants for the 2010-11 fiscal year. These grants fund artists in schools, afterschool arts programs for youth at risk, innovative outreach to encourage participation, community revitalization, programs for populations in need, funding to ensure that every citizen has access to quality arts experiences, as well as continuing support and organizational development.

The recipients are:

Alleghany County: Alleghany Arts Council, $7,764 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants; and Junior Appalachian Musicians, $8,000.

Ashe County: Ashe County Arts Council, $26,671 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants; Appalachian Concerto premier concert; and Traditional Arts Programs in Schools (TAPS).

Avery County: Avery Arts Council, $9,327 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants.

Davie County: Davie County Arts Council, $14,829 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants.

Forsyth County: The Arts Council of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, $83,596 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants; Authoring Action, $2,500, an outreach program for technical assistance; BOOKMARKS, $7,000 for readings, presentations, workshops, etc.; Hispanic Arts Initiative, $7,500 for multidisciplinary art classes for Latino youths; North Carolina Black Repertory Company, $32,775; Piedmont Opera, $29,396; Riverrun International Film Festival, $5,000; Thomas S. Kenan Institute for the Arts, $8,000; Winston-Salem Delta Fine Arts, $22,000 for a three-month exhibition featuring the African-American blues tradition, and outreach programs for sustaining support; and the Winston-Salem Symphony, $73,122.

Stokes County: Stokes County Arts Council, $15,540 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants.

Surry County: Surry County Arts Council, $32,026 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants, and Traditional Arts Programs in Schools.

Watauga County: Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University, $8,000 for an exhibition of contemporary Mexican art; Watauga County Arts Council, $24,818 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants, and Traditional Arts Programs in Schools.

Wilkes County: The Cultural Arts Council of Wilkes, $20,098 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants.

Yadkin County: Yadkin Arts Council, $13,767 for various arts programs, administrative support and subgrants.

The Arts Council of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County also received an additional $10,000 for a regional artist project promoting the professional development of artists in Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin counties.

The Ashe County Arts Council also received an additional $3,500 for a regional project promoting the professional development of artists in Alleghany, Ashe, Watauga and Wilkes counties.

IN CIVIC AFFAIRS

l Nathan Barrick recently represented Forsyth County at the inaugural North Carolina Association of County Commissioners Youth Summit-YouthVoice 2010, which was held in Greenville.

During the summit, youth attendees debated the top 10 issues facing youth. These issues were identified by 4-H’ers and youth in every county.

The young people then met in groups to prioritize the top 10 issues in their extension district.

Nathan is the 2010 Forsyth County 4-H Council president. He is the son of Michael and Melinda Barrick of Walkertown.

IN PUBLIC SERVICE

l Katharine Barrett has been awarded the Congressional Medal and Certificate of Service for her participation in the National Civilian Community Corps for 2009-10.

She has done volunteer work in Toledo, Ohio; Mobile, Ala.; Grand Rapids, Iowa; Muncie, Ind.; and Flint, Mich.

Barrett is a 2009 graduate of Mount Tabor High School, and is now attending Peace College in Raleigh. She is the daughter of Edith and William Barrett of Winston-Salem.

NCCC is an AmeriCorps program that engages 18- to 24-year-olds in team-based national and community service in the United States. Participants are placed in campuses around the country and serve communities in their region. During their year in AmeriCorps, volunteers perform over 1,700 hours of service.

IN THE MILITARY

l Air Force Airman Bradley A. Key has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He completed the eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. Completion of basic training has also earned him credits toward an associate-in-applied-science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Key is a 2009 graduate of Davie County High School, and he is the son of Rhonda Key of Mocksville, and the brother of Laura Luna of Salisbury.

 

l Army Pvt. Celessia D. Cannon has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the nine weeks of training she studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills.

Cannon is a 2009 graduate of East Forsyth High School, and she is the daughter of Chinno Ingram Sr. of Kernersville, and Trina Cannon of Winston-Salem.

 

l Navy Ensign Stanley R. Worthington recently began a five-month deployment to Afghanistan while assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133, home ported at Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport, Miss. NMCB-133’s primary mission on deployment will be providing construction support to improve the living and working quarters for the 30,000 troops needed in Afghanistan.

Worthington is a 2002 graduate of Charlotte Catholic High School in Charlotte. He joined the Navy in January 2009. He is the son of Carol and Richard Worthington of Mocksville.

IN SPORTS

l The CP3 Allstars recently returned from Orlando where they won the 2010 Super Showcase National Championship.

Throughout the season, the team faced various challenges on the court, and each time, win or lose, it was a learning experience that led to the eventual goal of being the best team in the nation. The team is comprised of hardworking young men who excel not only on the basketball court, but also in the classroom.

The National Champion CP3 roster consists of Steve Williams, JaQuel Richmond, Deion Robinson, Matty Madigan, Waymond Wright, Donovan Gilmore, Tyrek Coger, Sam Hunt, Malik Wright, Diante Baldwin, Greg McClinton, Rodney Purvis, and Terrell Leach. The coaching staff consists of head coach Jon Adams, assistant coaches Michael Noel, CJ Paul, Ronald Adams, bookkeeper Tiffany Noel, and business manager Ja’Net Adams.

IN OTHER AREAS

l Melissa Mainhart, a rising senior, and Caitlin Amos, a rising junior, and both Latin students at East Forsyth High School, recently joined students from 39 states at the National Junior Classical League Convention held at North Dakota State University. This past school year both served as JCL state officers, Melissa as president and Caitlin as historian.

Both girls received numerous awards at the national convention. Caitlin placed fourth in the Senior Girls 100-meter freestyle swim, fifth in the Senior Girls 200-meter freestyle swim, and third in decorative stitching. She ranked 32th among the 1,200 students who attended the convention. Melissa placed first in decorative stitching, second in chalk/ pastel and fourth in watercolor. She ranked 36th among all students.

Melissa and Caitlin both oversaw the creation of a traditional scrapbook for the East Forsyth Latin Club that won first place. Caitlin also placed second with the digital scrapbook that she created for the N.C. Junior Classical League.

East Forsyth Latin Club tied with Reynolds High School for the most original publicity activity in the nation, a chariot race featuring the WXII morning news team. East Forsyth also placed 13th in the nation in the publicity contest.

 

l The Pickin’ Porkers barbecue team of Clemmons has qualified to represent North Carolina in the 22nd annual Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue to be held in October in Tennessee. Teams throughout the world qualify for this event by winning barbecue competitions designated as state championships, and having their name drawn from a limited number of other qualifying teams.

Pickin’ Porkers’ team consists of head cook Roger Wise, his wife, Marsha, and their children, Nic, Sarah and Scott.

Since starting competitive barbecue, the Porkers have won state championships in North Carolina, Georgia and South Carolina.

They were ranked as one of the top 50 Kansas City Barbecue Society teams in the United States after only 17 competitions in 2008, and finished sixth overall in the country in the pork category in 2009. They are currently ranked 11th out of more than 4,000 teams in the pork category for 2010, with three months left in the competition season.

 

l The 2010 Alpha Acres New Beginnings one-year Recovery Program’s graduating class consists of seven men who made the decision a year ago to do something about their addictions, and try to straighten out their lives. This is one of the highlights of the year at Alpha Acres, a ministry of the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission. The graduation ceremony was held at South Oak Ridge Baptist Church in Yadkinville. Family members were in attendance.

The New Beginnings Recovery Program is a serious commitment for the individuals who enter into the arrangement, which alone lends itself to the tremendous success rate at Alpha Acres, nearly 85% for every graduating class.
