Regional Briefs: Winston-Salem man charged with robbery

An 18-year-old Winston-Salem man was charged yesterday with first-degree burglary and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

During a license check, Winston-Salem police discovered an outstanding warrant against Kevin Lavon Gee III of 1234 E. 29th St., sworn by investigators in connection with a home-invasion robbery last month.

According to the arrest warrant, Gee is accused of entering a house at 5000 Scenic Drive about 9:45 p.m. Aug. 6 and pulling a semi-automatic pistol on two residents. Property worth about $1,400 including an Xbox 360 video-game player, a 32-inch television, an Apple iTouch computer and four pairs of Air Jordon sneakers was taken.

Gee was being held last night in Forsyth County Jail with bond set at $50,000.

Money still available for rebates for energy-efficient appliances

KINSTON -- North Carolina energy officials say $500,000 remains in a fund to provide rebates to people who replace old appliances with newer, more energy-efficient ones.

The money is left over from $8.8 million provided by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. More than 62,000 appliances were purchased statewide.

Some people who applied for the rebates did not qualify, leading to about $500,000 being left over, said Seth Efron, a spokesman for the North Carolina Energy Office.

To be eligible, consumers must replace older appliances with Energy Star-qualified models, which use about 25 percent less electricity.

Rebates range from $75 for dishwashers and freezers to $300 for several appliances including central air conditioners. -- AP

The 12-year-old lion was diagnosed with mammary cancer two weeks ago.

Senior veterinarian Ryan DeVoe says the cancer had metastasized to the animal's lungs and she was suffering.

The lion had been at the North Carolina Zoo since 2002 and had been transferred from the Sedgwick County Zoo in Kansas.

The zoo says its 9-year-old male lion remains on exhibit and is in good health. -- AP
