A Winston-Salem toddler had minor injuries after the car he was riding in was stolen and involved in a hit-and-run accident Thursday, police said.
Police said a 911 caller notified authorities just after 6 p.m. that a car had been stolen from the 2300 block of Slater Street, and that a 2-year-old was inside.
The car matched the description of a car that a Winston-Salem police officer had seen driving in a careless and reckless manner on New Walkertown Road. The officer tried to catch up to the car to pull the driver over but lost sight of the car before he could catch up to it.
The car was found a short time later at the intersection of Fifth and Dunlieth streets, where it had been involved in a minor accident. Police haven't said if any other vehicles were involved.
The toddler was still strapped into the car. He was treated at the scene by EMS for minor injuries and returned to his caretaker, police said.
Raymond Levi Roberts, 41, of 122 Melody Lane, was charged with first-degree kidnapping, larceny of a vehicle, hit and run, and other traffic offenses. He is being held in the Forsyth County jail under a $250,000 bond.
