CURRITUCK

Visitors on the northern end of the Outer Banks are being ordered to leave before Hurricane Earl passes by the state.

Currituck County issued an evacuation order for visitors at 8:30 a.m. today.

The evacuation area includes all sections of Corolla and the stretches only accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles.

Permanent residents of the area are being urged to use extreme caution.

Carteret County ordered people off the Bogue Bank area early today. Hyde County had ordered an evacuation yesterday. Dare County evacuated Hatteras Island yesterday and ordered visitors to leave the rest of the county this morning.

Gov. Beverly Perdue says the state is prepared as Earl approaches.

The Winston-Salem Journal is looking for local residents who own land on the Outer Banks or whose vacation plans have been interrupted by Hurricane Earl. Contact Journal reporter Paul Garber at 727-7327 or at pgarber@wsjournal.com
