CHARLOTTE — AAA Carolinas estimated about 930,000 North Carolinians will travel during the Labor Day weekend, an 8.1 percent increase over last year.
"Travel by Carolinians has been increasing all year and this holds true for the last vacation of the summer," said David E. Parsons, the president and chief executive of AAA Carolinas.
AAA Carolinas also expects air travel to rise despite higher airfares.
In Winston-Salem, the average gallon of regular unleaded gasoline for the Labor Day weekend is $2.56, up 5 cents from Labor Day weekend in 2009.
Statewide, the average gallon of regular unleaded gasoline for the holiday is $2.58, rising 6 cents from the same period a year ago.
The most expensive gasoline in the state is in Boone at $2.65 and the least expensive is in Fayetteville at $2.54.
