Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County is celebrating its 25th anniversary this week by building a new role — that of developer.
The local chapter today began a four-day building blitz in honor of Jimmy Johnson, a local home builder who died in 2004.
What makes the five homes in the Smith Farm development in southeast Winston-Salem different is that the lots had been foreclosed by lenders when Habitat acquired them.
C. Edwards & Co. was the developer of Smith Farm and Trent Hill, which is off North Cherry Street, before pulling out the market last year.
That decision put phase III of Smith Farm in limbo and threatened home values in the development.
"We have become the finishing director of Smith Farm," said Sylvia Oberle, the executive director of the local chapter,
Oberle said that the chapter recognized the pullout as an opportunity to put a sizable portion of a $2 million federal grant to use. The grant, which the chapter received in March 2009, is aimed at stabilizing neighborhoods through buying and renovating foreclosed homes.
