Environmental activist Erin Brockovich will be at Wake Forest University on June 29 to speak about her opposition to Alcoa Inc.'s relicensing efforts.
Brockovich is best known for a 2000 movie, titled Erin Brockovich, about her efforts to help build a case against a gas and electric company in California. Julia Roberts won a best-actress Oscar for playing Brockovich in the film.
Brockovich's speech, which will be at 7 p.m. at Brendle Recital Hall, is being presented by the Yadkin Riverkeeper organization, a nonprofit group focused on water-quality issues.
Riverkeeper Dean Naujoks has been critical of Alcoa's relicensing bid. Alcoa wants to renew its 50-year license with the Federal Energy Regulatory Committee to operate four dams on the Yadkin. Brockovich is working on a class-action lawsuit involving Alcoa's Australian operations, according to a press release.
Her speech at Wake Forest is free, but reservations are required. For more information, call 722-4949.
