Turnout was light at most precincts today as voters cast ballots in the primary election.
Elections officials said polls would remain open until 7:30 p.m. today and that people in line at that time would still be allowed to vote.
Not that they expect lines.
"We still think it is a light turnout," said Rob Coffman, the director of elections, about 3:30 p.m. "It has been about 100 voters at most places. I still think we will fall within the 10 percent range."
A 10 percent turnout would bring about 20,000 voters to the polls today, not counting about 2,500 who cast ballots during the early-voting period.
A random survey found that only 49 people had voted at the 14th Street Recreation Center about 1 p.m., while almost 270 people had voted by 2:30 p.m. at the Kernersville Seventh-day Adventist Church. At Carver High School there were 75 people who had voted by 1:30 p.m., and 172 had voted in Walkertown by 2 p.m. At the Reynolds High School women's gym there were 141 who had voted by 12:30 p.m.
Voters for the first time were casting ballots in a nonpartisan school board race that drew 26 candidates. Formerly, candidates ran by party affiliation.
"If it was labeled for Democrat or Republican it would be easier for people who don't want to do a lot of research," said voter Leslie Falstreau in Walkertown.
