Bright Leaf Drive-In movie theater to close

»  Comments | Post a Comment

MOUNT AIRY — The Bright Leaf Drive In movie theater has closed after 55 years in business, according to the theater's Web site.

The drive-in theater on North Andy Griffith Parkway was closed last weekend. The owner of the land where the drive-in is located decided not to renew the lease with the current theater owners.

"It is our understanding that the land is going to be sold and there they will no more drive-in," the Web site says.

Jason and Nicole White own drive-in theater and have plans to sell all of its equipment. The Whites are previous employees of the business. Jason White did not return a call seeking comment.

The Bright Leaf, named for the large amount of tobacco grown in Surry County, was started in May 1955 by Don Davis. He died in January 2005.
